The Official Technology Thread

I had a cable outage in my neighborhood on Tuesday and after everything came back up, I'm not getting 2 HD channels that are part of the package I'm subscribed to. Just had a tech here for 45 minutes or more and he said that the signal was fine, in fact he said the signal was too loud. Then he said that the issue with the channels not coming up was an issue with my PVR. Personally, I'm calling bs on this. To me if the issue was with my PVR then it would be impacting more than 2 channels. Anyone else have an opinion on this?

Do you guys have unlimited cell phone data?

It'd be worth using your device as a hotspot in that case.

I'm pretty sure you don't because those as sharp as the users here would have thought of that.

The most Bell/Rogers/Telus give out is 6gig.

Sounds like BS especially if it just started after a cable outage.

Turns out it was BS. I noticed another tech truck in the parking lot when I got up this morning. I checked those channels after they left and those 2 channels are now back in HD. Good thing too. I bought my PVR when I got my TV and didn't really want to add $25 a month to my bill to rent a new one.

The Z10 (BlackBerry 10) smartphone:

There's some really impressive features in the BB10 that you just can't do with iPhone. BB now has the best touch-screen keyboard in the business, the best camera, makes the best use of swiping/gestures, and remains the prime business mobile machine for those users. I'm really impressed, and can't wait to get one of those BB10's when my existing plan is up in the summer.

It's not at all the best camera, nor do I think it makes the best use of gestures. None of the specs are anything we haven't seen before - in fact most of them have been on the S3 since June-July 2012, which is a long time in the smartphone world.

I'm not against the Z10 but to play off opinions as fact is a bit unfair.

I like the ability to switch between business/personal use with ease on the phone.  I can see where that would be very handy for people who have blackberrys for work and still want to have personal stuff like Facebook/Twitter etc.  Overall there isn't a huge motivation for existing iPhone/Android users to switch over, but I think blackberry users will still be there.  There's enough of a market to have 3 big players.  Blackberry will carve out it's niche.

The thing is more and more large corporations are switching away from company issued phones. Now that smartphones are becoming so common, companies are seeing a way to save money so instead of issuing everyone a Blackberry they are telling them pick whatever smartphone you want and use it.
The company issued phone is where Blackberry thrives and if that market disappears that could truly spell the end.
I know at my office, which is a typical Fortune 500 company, we were issued new Blackberrys a year and a half ago. Now talking to the folks in IT it looks like when the next contract is up, we'll get to use whatever phone we want.

Our company was issuing BB's and we aquired a company that only used iphones so they started allowing us to order iphones and slowly everyone was switching.

I think I'd want a BB10 if I was due for a new phone.  Although one of the reasons is that we don't have company issued samsungs.  :P

Can't remember where I saw it, but it was mentioned that around 30% of Rogers customer base are BB devices. that's a pretty good chunk.

Oh no now I won't be able to take a photo of my dinner if the light is dim.

Not a photographer Potvin? Low light ability is one of the most important attributes on any camera.

Even then, like I said, these specs have been out for a long time in the smartphone world. Why not just pony up $350 or whatever it is for a Nexus 4? It's specs are comparable and at almost half the price.
