The Official Technology Thread

Ya run a busy website like this, you'd think I'd be okay with technology...

If I find a site for downloading tv shows, and I download it onto a memory stick, can I stick the memory stick into the tv and will it play?

If the TV has a USB slot and can playback whatever file type the shows are in. Generally speaking they can play back .mp4 files and sometimes .avi's.

Awesome.  Anyone care to PM me some sites that you can find seedy stuff at?  ;)

I PM'd ya one that's good for TV shows.

Mucho appreciated!  You're right - True Blood and Newsroom from last night are up and posted.

Any movie sites?

I have one that is private and requires you to upload as much as you download, there are public ones out there.

Sent the PM too Chev.

By connecting a new flexible, thin-film Li-ion battery to a flexible organic LED, a team of researchers from South Korea has demonstrated the first fully functional all-flexible electronic system. In other words, they have shown the total integration of a flexible display and battery on a single plastic substrate without the help of bulk electronics. The achievement relies on a new fabrication method that enables flexible batteries to work with a variety of electrode materials, overcoming previous electrode limitations.

A quick tech question if anyone could help.

So my old lap top, after years of sputtering, finally gave out on me a couple weeks ago when the screen essentially stopped working. I'd boot it up I'd get the HP logo and then just total black no matter how long I left it on.

Anyways, being as it was old and garbage anyway I decided to buy a new laptop and I was wondering what would be the best ways to get files from the old laptop to the new one? The old one can turn on but the screen doesn't work so I can't log on to windows at all or alter settings. Would just one of those transfer cables work or would I need to be able to actually use both computers for that?

If it was me, I'd just pull the hard drive out of the old one and connect it to the new one with a USB cable.

Something like this: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3276554&CatId=3770

You'd have to confirm it has the right connection. Also, if you're willing to wait a bit, you can order the same cable off of ebay for 1/3 the price.

A straight transfer isn't going to work if you can't change the settings on the original computer in order to share the files. Yanking the hard drive is probably your best bet.

Try hooking a monitor up to laptop and maybe just the screen has died.  This happened to me before.

I think this is what I'm going to try as I wouldn't know the first thing about opening the old one up. Thanks for all the answers though.

Type your make/model number into youtube and there's a good likelihood of finding a video with how to disassemble your particular laptop. If you're trashing it anyway, there's very little to worry about (just make sure you unplug it and remove the battery first!) It's a simple process, but you'll probably have to remove about 50 screws to get to the harddrive.

Anyone either have or know someone who has the Galaxy Note?

I'm more interested in the S3 I think, but the size of the Note is heaven to my eyes.

Anyone?

Quantum chip breakthrough to unleash ?ultra-fast? computing

Scientists have built a new quantum chip that will enable the creation of completely secure mobile phones and ultra-fast computers with capabilities far beyond today?s devices.

The international research team behind the breakthrough, who are based at the University of Bristol, will detail the development at the British Science Festival in Aberdeen this week.

In the short term, the team are applying the technology to safe communications for mobile phones and computers, which would make online banking and internet shopping more secure. Phones could be protected against hacking attempts.

...

The new chip is made from silicon, like the microprocessors in all computers and smart phones. Unlike conventional silicon chips that work by controlling electrical current, the quantum chips manipulate particles of light, called photons, to perform calculations. A quantum computing device with 100 photons could in principle solve trillions of equations at the same time.

Because the technology uses the same silicon manufacturing techniques as conventional chips, a manufacturer can easily produce millions of quantum chips.

The new circuits are compatible with existing optical glass fibre infrastructure used in broadband communications, because they operate at the same wavelengths. ?The global communications network, including the internet, is powered by fibre optics which use light to move information at high speed between countries, cities and buildings,? said Mark Thompson, deputy director of Bristol?s Centre for Quantum Photonics. ?Our devices are directly compatible ? in a sense they talk the same language.?

I don't own the Note, but I managed to get my hands on one from a friend who owns a Rogers dealership.  Fantastic screen, and that stylus makes the day!

I would have liked to have had one myself, instead of the Iphone 4s for the next while to tie me over until the next generation iphone comes to market.  Could not do that due to a contract misunderstanding with Rogers & ended up with the Iphone 4s (only phone I was eligible to upgrade to).

My friend said to me that he thinks Rogers wanted me to have the 4s -- "It's like comparing apples to oranges" -- in reference to IOS & Android OS.

I agree.  Still, the Note would have been fun to use.  I'm certain you'll enjoy it! :)

I wonder if Windows/Nokia will make any noise in the cellphone world?  Wonder if a RIM/Nokia partnership would work???
