The Official TFC/Soccer thread

Forza Giovinco!

The scoreboard might as well have read, Giovinco 4  Orlando City SC 1, as the Toronto FC's Sebastian Giovinco scored all of the TFC's four goals, thus sending the Orlando City SC out of soccer orbit.

He did not score all 4 goals. He had a hat trick, which is still pretty damn impressive. Boxscore from the MLS website:

Goals and Assists
12' Sebastian Giovinco (TFC) (PK)
17' Luke Boden (OCSC)
Assisted By: Cristian Higuita
56' Sebastian Giovinco (TFC)
81' Collen Warner (TFC)
Assisted By: Jonathan Osorio, Benoit Cheyrou
88' Sebastian Giovinco (TFC)
Assisted By: Benoit Cheyrou

16 for Giovinco which is good for the MLS lead and a new TFC season record.

The Toronto FC ties a franchise-setting record of 11 wins (also set last season), as they defeat the Montreal Impact 2-1 at home in Toronto, yesterday (Saturday).

But no without a price, as in some injuries to some players, including star striker Sebastian Giovinco, out with an abductor injury.  Too bad for Giovinco as he is to join Italy's national team, gli AZZURRI, for Euro 2016.  However, there will be a medical reassessment to determine his status before travelling to Italy.

The TFC stand fourth in the Eastern Conference and the roster needs all hands on deck to guarantee the team's position for it's playoff spot.  With Cheyrou, Lovitz, and Warner out (though the latter will be serving a suspension), plus Altidore's srint with the U.S. national team and now Giovinco...ouch!  That stings for the TFC.

The team remains upbeat and positive going into the stretch.  Let's hope they continue that way.

GO TFC GO!!

Led by MVP candidate Sebastian Glovinco who potted two goals, the TFC defeated the lowly Colorado Rapids at home today 3-1.

The TFC, currently fifth in the Eastern Conference, have five games remaining in the season, which makes today's victory at BMO Field all the more important.  Only the top six teams in the order of the Eastern Conference standings make the playoffs.

Here's an interesting tidbit:  The Toronto FC are a perfect 9-0 when scoring first in games this season.

The Toronto FC's Sebastian Giovinco set a MLS points record for most goals/assists in a season, and in helping the TFC earn a much-needed victory over the Chicago Fire, 3-2,  at BMO Field this afternoon.

The TFC are currently in fifth place in the Eastern Conference with four games remaining in the season.  The victory today helped solidify their fifth place hold over the Orlando City FC & the Montreal Impact, and nearly clinch a playoff spot.

GO TFC!!!

Actually it was 20 mins, but still awesome though.

Giovinco and Altidore lead the TFC to a 3-1 victory over Philadelphia, in MLS action yesterday at BMO Field in Toronto.

The TFC with 46 pts, and fifth in the Eastern Conference, can clinch a playoff berth, with a win or tie against the New York Red Bull Oct.14th (Wednesday).

Let's go TFC!!

The possibility is there for TFC to actually host a home playoff game. They are 5th place on 46 points. Columbus and New England are tied for 3rd on 47 points but TFC has a game in hand on both.

Remaining schedule:
NE (2) - vs MTL, @ NYCFC
CLB (2) - @ TFC, vs DC
TFC (3) - vs NYRB, vs CLB, @ MTL

All 3 Canadian MLS teams could make the playoffs. Vancouver has already clinched a spot in the West. Montreal has a 4 point edge on Orlando. Both teams have 2 games to play

Long time in waiting!!

As they'd say in Italian, finalmente -- finally!

While the Blue Jays and their fans were celebrating the team's ALDS triumph over the Texas Rangers Wednesday night, not far from the Rogers Centre there lay another celebration, as TFC soccer fans rejoiced at BMO Field following the Toronto FC's convincing win over the league's best team the New York Red Bull...

....and for the first time in franchise history (make that nine frustrating years), the TFC earned themselves a playoff berth!!
Alright!!

Once again led by the seemingly limitless and dynamically-gifted Italian -- striker Sebastian Giovinco (better known by the nickname  the "Atomic Ant"), quite possibly the city's best athlete in the running for MLS MVP.

After playing 30 minutes for Italy vs. Norway in a Euro qualifier on Tuesday, Giovinco replaced Gomez in the 71st minute and then struck seven minutes later. The Atomic Ant went on a fabulous run, working the ball between both feet as he slalomed through a handful of New York players before firing home from inside the box, and scoring one of the best goals ever witnessed at BMO Field.

All of this just four hours after his flight from Rome touched down in Toronto. Incredibile, as they?d say in Italy.

?He texted me immediately after the [Italy] game last night. He texted me before he got on the plan. He texted me when he landed. He texted me as soon as he got [to BMO Field]. He said he was going to play, he was ready to play,? Vanney said.

Yesterday was dubbed "Decision Day" by MLS, as many clubs were vying for final playoff spots, berths, etc.  For the Toronto FC,  it may as well have been dubbed 'Drogba Day', as the  Montreal Impact forward single-handedly defeated the TFC at Stade Saputo in Montreal.

Drogba's two goals led the Impact to a 2-I victory over the TFC, thus securing them third place in the  Eastern Conference, while the TFC slumped to sixth.  If the Toronto FC had won, it would have the exact opposite giving them the third spot rather than sixth.  Oh well, goodbye to home field advantage and hello playoffs.

Maybe some may blame TFC defender Ahmed Kantari who was atrocious in allowing Drogba a free reign, or maybe it was just plain bad luck.  Whatever.  The first round of the playoffs begins this upcoming Thursday (Oct. 28) as the TFC play the Impact in Montreal.

Good luck to the Toronto FC.

GO TFC GO!!

Giovinco wins Golden Boot as league's too scorer.  VIVA Sebastian!

For the first time in Toronto FC's history, Sebastian Giovinco, otherwise known as "The Atomic Ant", was named the 2015 winner of MLS' top scoring award -- the Golden Boot.

In the process, Giovinco broke an MLS record in posting 22 goals along with 16 assists.  (The Columbus Crew's Kamara was runner-up to Giovinco in the goals departm nt but the Italian forward had the greater number of assists).
Giovinco became the first player in league history to have scored and recorded at least 20 goals & 10 assists, plus he owned the record for most shots taken at 181.

Fantastic accomplishments and a huge reason for the TFC's success this season.

Way to go, #10!!

MLS is back and so are the Toronto FC.  All signs point to something positive as the TFC won it's season-opening game on the road against the New York Red Bull, including another road game coming off against the New York FC.

So far, a good start to the season.  Sunday's upcoming matchup -- season home opener at BMO Field -- will be against Sporting Kansas City and will feature the d?but of TFC forward Jozy Altidore, who missed the team's first two season-opening road games due to international commitments.

GO TFC GO!

Source:  Sportsnet

Altidore missed the 1st two games with a hamstring injury, not because of national team commitments.

The home opener is on May 7th, not today.

Man we were ripped so bad by the ref in Kansas, I felt the Frazer dagger all over again.  What does it take to watch a replay (or do they have a replay in the MLS, if not they should).

The Toronto FC defeated DC United last Saturday 1-0, in which TFC striker Sebastdan Giovinco scored the fastest goal in TFC history (and whose marker earned his team the victory).

The TFC, with their season-starting eight road games, sport six points, and are scoring on average one goal a game.  Nothing fancy, just some solid defence and occasional scoring.

TFC's next game is against the surging Impact in Montreal this Saturday.

Nice to see a small team win the Premier League. Leicester, who were bottom 18 months ago, won the title with odds at over 5000 to 1.
Here are some things the bookmakers thought more likely:
Prime Minister Simon Cowell - 500/1
Piers Morgan as Arsenal manager - 2,500/1
Sir Alex Ferguson to win Strictly Come Dancing - 1,000/1
The Queen for Christmas number one - 1,000/1
Loch Ness monster to be discovered - 500/1
Triplets for Kate and William - 1,000/1
Kim Kardashian for US president - 2,000/1
Is Elvis alive? - 2,000/1

The TFC defeat the Dallas FC 1-0 Saturday, before a capacity crowd of 30,000 at the newly renovated BMO Field.

Goal scored by Japanese draft pick Tsubasa Endoh.

The surging TFC are second in the Eastern Conference, just behind the leading Montreal Impact.

Truly amazing season and I've seen nothing like it in my 36 years on the planet. Just cannot believe it has happened given their budget and squad compared to the other bigger teams with far greater resources. They are going to win the league by a minimum of 7 points and potentially as much as 13 so it's not even close. It's been massively deserved.

I have a number of friends who are Spurs fans and they're all pretty gutted that they've missed out in subpar seasons for the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea. This season was probably their best shot at the title for the forseeable future - I can't see the aforementioned teams being as poor as they were all at once again plus with Manchester United and Liverpool starting to get their mojo back.
