Oh what a heartbreaker it was!
The Seattle Sounders win the MLS Cup with a 5-4 shootout win over the Toronto FC before a packed BMO Field crowd, utterly disappointed and heartbroken at the result. (Note that there were a group of Sounders fans who made the trek from Seattle to Toronto foe the game).
After a scoreless full-time and extra-time, the two teams faced a shootout. Both the TFC and Sounders had one of their shots stopped, though theTFC's Bradley failed to connect in the first round of the shootout. Next round, the TFC's Morrow attempted to kick the ball high, and hit just under the crossbar instead, much to the delight of the Seattle bench who could now win it all breaking the shootout deadlock. Win it they did, as the Sounders Torres unleashed a shot that was surefire past the TFC's sprawled netminder Irwin, and the Sounders were declared champions!
What an ending, right down tot the wire, so to speak. A nerve-wrecking one no doubt, especially for the hopeful Toronto FC fans, but, it just wasn't to be....
MVP? Why, the Sounders 'keeper Stefan Frei, a former TFC draftee who was eventually let go by his former club. Revenge for Frei? A little extra motivation always helps. Perhaps one will look back and say that Frei's astounding save on a Jozey Altidore header, that looked like a goal, gave his team the Sounders a boost and the TFC more frustration.
Both team's were equal in their defence and offence. While the TFC put up a formidable defence -- Seattle became the first team in MLS playoff history with zero shots in a game -- and in a way generated more scoring chances than Seattle could, somehow, the TFC still couldn't shake off the Sounders strategy which was to cover Giovinco and Altidore. Giovinco did not have his best game, even shooting outside the net when he had a great chance at a goal, and was substituted later for Toussaint Ricketts.
Giovinco, upset about his game, had a few choice words at his team's bench and threw something out of sheer frustration. Some people were questioning TFC coach Vanney, on whether Ricketts should have come on earlier. With Ricketts there, the TFC was able to generate some more chances and a near miss by Ricketts himself.
Congratulations to the Seattle Sounders, a team that went from last to first to champions. The Sounders were languishing in last place in their Conference in the first half of the season, then changed the coaching personnel as well as some player changes, and the rest is history. Job well done, Seattle.
A big applause and congratulations to the Toronto FC on being the first-ever Canadian-based team to appear in a MLS Cup Final. Having had their best season as a franchise, the TFC made believers of not just soccer fans, but the city as a whole, which got behind the team, cheering them all the way in these playoffs. Hopefully, the TFC can retain their core group and continue to improve and add to the team. Michael Bradley and Jozey Altidore were arguably the best players on the field yesterday, but don't discount Drew Moor, or Morrow, or Johnson, et al. The team has found it's niche with the young talent and a mix of good veterans.
May the best continue to shine!
