Yeah it is a tremendous story.. As an Everton fan I was more than happy to see someone other than the big 4 or 5 win it.. Kudos to them. May never see the likes again

Yep, agreed that it's not a likely thing to happen again. I support Leyton Orient (4th tier) so it will never happen to us that's for sure!

In case no one has noticed (not in Italy anyway), Toronto FC's Sebastian Giovinco left off Italian national team for Euro 2016, causing a ruckus among TFC fans.  ItalIan team manager Antonio Conte's comment was aimed at the quality of play in the MLS:

?It?s clear that if you make such choices in football then at the end you might pay the consequences,? Conte stated.

The Toronto FC snapped both a four-game winless streak and a non-scoring streak in defeating the L.A. Galaxy 1-0, before 30000+ spectators at BMO Field.

The TFC has been missing some key players to either international commitments or injury.

It has been awhile since anyone mentioned anything about the Toronto FC on this board,  what with all the attention focused on other topics, it doesn't hurt to see where the TFC are at this point in their season....

...just a point back of the New York City FC in the Eastern Conference!

The TFC had the chance to overtake the NYCFC yesterday but instead ended  up in a  1-1draw against the Houston Dynamo.

How did the TFC get this far in their season, what with all the injuries to key players?    Perseverance and a willingness to stay focused.

Here are the current MLS standings:

Big day for the  TFC this  afternoon against the New York Red Bulls.  Should the TFC win or draw, they'll secure themselves a playoff spot and inch closer to finishing in first place in the Eastern Conference.

The Toronto FC (13-8-7 46 pts.) is attempting to not only win the East, but be the team with the best record in MLS and win the Supporters Shield in finishing first overall.

Hot on their heels are two New York teams -- the New York City FC (12-9-9 45 pts.) and the Red Bulls (12-9-8 44 pts.) in the  Eastern Conference.  The TFC have two games in hand,  an important advantage.

To win the overall title, the TFC need to overtake league leader FC Dallas (15-8-7 52 pts.).

By finishing first in the East, at least, the TFC would earn a playoff bye and would have home field advantage going into the Semi-Finals.

A lot is at stake.  It starts today.  C'mon TFC!!  GO!!!!

Job done!  The Toronto FC clinches a playoff spot in a 3-3 draw against New York Red Bulls at home at BMO Field.  Thanks to Jozey Altidore's  two goals that capped a comeback for the TFC, who were missing top star Giovinco to injury along with Tosaint Ricketts and some other players as well.

With the win, the TFC inches closer to FC Dallas for the overall league lead and continues  to secure their perch atop the Eastern Conference.

The team has five games remaining on the seqson and four of these games will be played at home.  So far, so very good.

GO TFC!!!!!

The Toronto  FC made franchise playoff history  last night as they not only defeated the Philadelphia Union 3-1 at BMO field,  they actually won their first ever playoff home game.

And how!  TFC striker Sebastian Giovinco led the way in scoring a goal and two assists, as well as  contributions from  Osorio & Altidore.

The TFC now advance to the Semi-Finals in an aggregate series against the New York City FC.  Game 1 goes Sunday at BMO Field.

GO TFC GO!!

A rough and tumble game that saw six yellow cards issued,  before a capacity crowd at BMO Field here in Toronto, the TFC made good on their determination to win their all-important opening game of this Eastern Conference Semi-Final over the New York City FC, by a 2-0 score.

Thanks to Ricketts and Altidore who found the net, as the TFC now only need a draw in the return match in New York next week.  This is an aggregate series which is why a draw is all that's needed now for the Toronto FC to advance.

An exciting time for Toronto soccer fans indeed!

GO TFC GO!!!

Canadian soccer fans rejoice!

For the first time ever in MLS history, there will be an all-Canadian teams Eastern Conference Finals, between the Toronto FC and the Montreal Impact!

The TFC won it's aggregate Semi-Final over the New York City FC by a combined score of 7-0.  Before nearly 30,000 spectators at Yankee Stadium yesterday afternoon, Sebastian Giovinco, with his three goals & assist, plus some help from Jozey Altidore, was all the TFC needed to put away their opponents.  Actually, all the Toronto FC needed was a draw to win, but no, the TFC exploded offensively, thus propelling them onto next weekend's ECF against the Impact.

As for the Impact, they they won their aggregate Semi-Final over the New York Red Bull by a combined score of 3-1, led on goals by Ignacio Piatti and some stellar goalkeeping from Evan Buch.  It is the first foray too in the franchise's history in playing in an Eastern Conference Final.  Off against the TFC they will go!

A great day indeed for Canadian MLS followers.  A showdown between Montreal and Toronto is never boring.  Can hardly wait...meantime...

GO TFC GO!!!

Before a jam-packed crowd of 60,000+ at Montreal's Stade Olympique, the Montreal Impact thought they had put the Toronto FC, (and their hopes of staying alive), to rest, but alas, anything can happen with time remaining in a soccer matchup....

...and this game, the First Leg of the MLS Eastern Conference Championship, became no ordinary game after the Impact took a convincing 3-0 lead, as the TFC struck for two quick goals by Altidore & Bradley, and suddenly, the TFC earned themselves an excellent chance of winning this aggregate series.

The final score was 3-2 in favour  of Montreal, with the Second Leg to be played here in Toronto at BMO Field November 30th.

All the TFC need to take this series is win by a shutout (1-0) or by a score of 2-1.  Difficult to do?  Not by the TFC's measurement, and certainly not by their boisterous, raucous spectators in-waiting, waiting to cheer on the Reds in their quest for glory.

GO TFC GO!!!

Job done!!

Before a crowd of 38,000+ screaming fanatics at BMO Field, right here in Toronto, the Toronto FC scored twice in extra time and put the game well out of reach,  in defeating the Montreal Impact 5-2, thus winning the Eastern Conference Final (aggregate) 7-5.

Whoa!!  What a way to go, TFC!!  Having lost Game 1 (First Leg) of this series 3-2, the TFC's only hope was to win Game 2 (Second Leg) by scores of 2-0 or even 3-1 and hope the Impact fall flat.  Well, didn't they ever, that is,  after the Impact took a first half lead....that was going to be the last lead for Montreal, as the TFC came roaring back to take it all.

Not even the pouring rain nor a soggy field could stop Toronto, as the TFC got goals from Ricketts and Cheyrou in the extra time.  Cheyrou came on as a substitute for the injured Sebastian Giovinco in the second half.  Speaking of Giovinco, his two corner kicks led to goals and that includes Jozey Altidore who played another astounding game in these playoffs.

Altidore becomes the first player in MLS playoff history to score in five straight games.  Fantastic!

An incredible win not just for the TFC, their long-suffering fans, the city, but also for Canadian soccer in general.  This series between two high-flying teams -- the impact, who, by the way, continue to be one of the premiere teams in the league, and the TFC, who, with an impressive cast of players, had one of the most successful seasons in team history -- showcased soccer at it's very best.

So now, the TFC, Eastern Conference Champions, march to the MLS Cup against the Seattle Sounders, Western Conference Champions, next Saturday  here in Toronto at BMO Field.

Oh joy!!

Oh what a heartbreaker it was!

The Seattle Sounders win the MLS Cup with a 5-4 shootout win over the Toronto FC before a packed BMO Field crowd, utterly disappointed and heartbroken at the result.  (Note that there were a group of Sounders fans who made the trek from Seattle to Toronto foe the game).

After a scoreless full-time and extra-time, the two teams faced a shootout.  Both the TFC and Sounders had one of their shots stopped, though theTFC's Bradley failed to connect in the first round of the shootout.  Next round, the TFC's Morrow attempted to kick the ball high, and hit just under the crossbar instead, much to the delight of the Seattle bench who could now win it all breaking the shootout deadlock. Win it they did, as the Sounders Torres unleashed a shot that was surefire past the TFC's sprawled netminder Irwin, and the Sounders were declared champions!

What an ending, right down tot the wire, so to speak.  A nerve-wrecking one no doubt, especially for the hopeful Toronto FC fans, but, it just wasn't to be....

MVP?  Why, the Sounders 'keeper Stefan Frei, a former TFC draftee who was eventually let go by his former club.  Revenge for Frei?  A little extra motivation always helps.  Perhaps one will look back and say that Frei's astounding save on a Jozey Altidore header, that looked like a goal, gave his team the Sounders a boost and the TFC more frustration.

Both team's were equal in their defence and offence.  While the TFC put up a formidable defence -- Seattle became the first team in MLS playoff history with zero shots in a game -- and in a way generated more scoring chances than Seattle could, somehow, the TFC still couldn't shake off the Sounders strategy which was to cover Giovinco and Altidore.  Giovinco did not have his best game, even shooting outside the net when he had a great chance at a goal, and was substituted later for Toussaint Ricketts.

Giovinco, upset about his game, had a few choice words at his team's bench and threw something out of sheer frustration.  Some people were questioning TFC coach Vanney, on whether Ricketts should have come on earlier. With Ricketts there, the TFC was able to generate some more chances and a near miss by Ricketts himself.

Congratulations to the Seattle Sounders, a team that went from last to first to champions.  The Sounders were languishing in last place in their Conference in the first half of the season, then changed the coaching personnel as well as some player changes, and the rest is history.  Job well done, Seattle.

A big applause and congratulations to the Toronto FC on being the first-ever Canadian-based team to appear in a MLS Cup Final.  Having had their best season as a franchise, the TFC made believers of not just soccer fans, but the city as a whole, which got behind the team, cheering them all the way in these playoffs.  Hopefully, the TFC can retain their core group and continue to improve and add to the team.  Michael Bradley and Jozey Altidore were arguably the best players on the field yesterday, but don't discount Drew Moor, or Morrow, or Johnson, et al.  The team has found it's niche with the young talent and a mix of good veterans.
May the best continue to shine!
