The Official TFC/Soccer thread

What a show of force!  This afternoon at BMO Field and before a national U.S. tv audience, the Toronto FC destroyed the David Villa-led New York City FC by a shutout score of 5-0.

The score itself was practically an understatement unto itself, as the TFC served notice to anyone paying attention, that they fully intent to keep their grip on being one of  MLS's elite teams.  Of course, soccer followers already denoted that for the simple fact that the TFC sports one of the best bench depth in the league.

By remaining undefeated at home this season, BMO Field has fast become evermore of an adversary to play in. And judging by the way the TFC dominate their opponents here on home field, it sure shows no signs of stopping.

Sebastian Giovinco, who by the way is in consideration for MVP honours, scored twice.  The second goal was his 50th in seventy-seven MLS games.  Other contributions came from Raheem Edwards and Jozey Altidore.

The TFC are first overall and tops in the Eastern Conference, six points atop the NYCFC.

GO TFC!

The score was 4-0. No offense but wow, you do seem to get a lot of info wrong.

I was unable to read the top of the article (was using my smartphone).  I realized my error, was then about to correct it but didn't have time.  Sorry.

No need to apologize to him. Did the extra goal really make a difference in his life? And the article had both the 5-0 score(a game from last year) and the 4-0 score in the first paragraph.

I agree, there is no need for hockeyfan to apologize just like there is no need for you to call anyone a prick.

But really, if I routinely posted recaps that had glaring errors or omissions I would understand if they were pointed out. It's nothing personal.

You know, I posted that response without being bothered or angry, it was just an observation. But I can see it being construed as  douchey or "prickish" and I apologize to hockeyfan if she took it that way. The Andy can admit when he's wrong ;)

The upcoming Saturday game between the Toronto FC and DC United at RFK Stadium won't just be another soccer game but one of many that will be implemented with "VAR -- Video Assistant Referee".

There has been a mixed attitude about this by some players -- the TFC's Michael Bradley "doesn't like it', while Drew Moor and coach Vanney are "open-minded."

MLS states that  "VAR will review ?potential clear and obvious errors or serious missed incidents in four game-changing situations ? goals, penalty decisions, direct red cards, and cases of mistaken identity.?

How this will impact the game, or, even some teams such as the TFC remains to be seen.

"I?ve watched the last several games, including ours in New York, with the thought of this coming in and how it would have or might have impacted those games, what calls might have been changed. My hope is that it will have less impact than everybody sort of suspects it will ? [that it?ll have] less of an impact on the time of the game and the length of the game, and more clear impact in terms of getting calls right,? Vanney stated.

The Toronto FC keep marching on!

Their latest victory yesterday (Sunday) over the Montreal Impact, a 3-1 win at Stade Saputo, giving the club their ninth consecutive victory and solidifying the TFC's hold atop the Eastern Conference with a nine-point gap over the New York City FC.

With "La Formica Atomica" (The Atomic Ant) -- that's Giovinco -- scoring two goals, including a solo by Altidore, the TFC with 56 points on the year and with seven games remaining can very well most likely set a franchise record for a most successful season, but can also surpass the L.A. Galaxy's single season points record (61).

Will they?  Can they?  By all means, the big red machine, with it's incomparable depth, surely can continue their climb to greatness, no doubt in their fans' minds.

GO TFC!

In the words of Rodney Dangerfield...Giovinco "can't get no respect" from former Italian national team  Antonio Conte and current coach Giampiero Ventura.  For the upteenth time, Seba was ignored while the NYCFC's  David Villa made Team Spain,  for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

According to Forza Italian Football website editor Dov Schiavone (via theathletic), he had this to say about the Euro or moreso Italian perception of the MLS brand:

?MLS is still perceived in Italy, and Europe, as a second rate league,? Schiavone said via email. ?So, even though he is playing well and working wonders with TFC, it isn't given much recognition in Italy at all.?

Just as Giovinco's agent found, as previous Italian national team coach Antonio Conte had done and with Giampiero Ventura's decision to leave Giovinco off gli Azzurri again, equally puzzling and "absurd":

Translation:
Ventura, however, continues to not convene him in the national team. What do you think?
"I find it absurd, it is a shame that a player with his skills, with its characteristics and with the goal's goal is not called. Giovinco knows how to score in all ways, even on a kick of punishment, is very titled in his club and an absolute protagonist in MLS. I do not understand why they should be called panchins of Italian teams in their place, unfortunately history is always the same lately. "

Was. Current coach is Giampiero Ventura.  Considered both 'idiots' for their seeming 'vitriolic' disdain of all things MLS.

Sure, at this point denying Giovinco is silly, the MLS still has a ways to go though before it's taken seriously, broadly speaking.

You need to take a little more time to understand the things you're talking about.

Without malice, it's fair to say that a lot of your posts have pretty basic mistakes  in them, it smacks of someone who means well, but doesn't have enough respect for their intended audience, to even get the basics correct.

So what's the point?

If I was casually talking about the Leafs here and lambasted Randy Carlyle for his handling of coaching duties last year, I'd be laughed off the site, right?

I understand what you mean.  Perhaps it's because, yes, I don't take this too seriously (no disrespect to anyone), but really, I'm not a professional journalist or anything.  I understand your point, though.

The truth is, in reality, I'm not the error-prone person I seem to present myself as being here on this site.  I'm a pretty factual individual who likes to search for answers and facts before making a decision, be it medical or otherwise.  That actually goes for anything.  I guess I don't come across as that way on this discussion board.  That's too bad because I am a far more conversational person than I even appear to be in discussions on this site.  The keyboard isn't my best friend.  People are often surprised at my knowledge in my conversations because I'm a shy person by nature.  :)

Clinched!

The Toronto FC rolled over the San Jose Earthquakes at BMO Field Saturday in 4-0 romp.  Playoffs here we come!

That's right.  The TFC clinched the post-season with their 15th unbeaten home win of the year, and 10th straight victory.  The Supporters Shield looks very much a likelihood -- it is awarded to the first place finisher overall -- and the TFC are surely well in pursuit of that goal.

With goals by Osorio, Vasquez, and two by Altidore, there is nothing that stands in the way of the TFC's climb to a possible record-setting points season.  The most points garnered by an MLS team was the L.A. Galaxy at 68 (in 1998).  Toronto is on pace to surpass that with the way their season is going.

There are six games remaining and a possible 18 points in total.  Michael Bradley knows only too well how much his club desires to make MLS history:

?We feel good about where we are, what we?ve done. But there isn?t one person who is satisfied. Not even close,? captain Michael Bradley promised.

?We have to keep going. There?s six games left, 18 points on the table. We want to take as many of those as possible. We want to win the Supporters? Shield, and as soon the regular season is done we?re going to regroup and make sure that [we?re ready for the playoffs].?

That said, look out world!

GO TFC!

With five games remaining on the season, the Toronto FC's quest to win the Supporters Shield is just one more win away, to finish first with the best record overall in the league.

Having already clinched their post-season appearance, the TFC not only will set it's sights on winning the Shield but also on establishing a new MLS points record, hopefully shattering the mark held by the L.A.Galaxy (68).

The club is well on it's way to achieving the above goals as the TFC demonstrated it's sheer depth in a 4-0 blowout of the Galaxy Saturday in Los Angeles.  With goals and clever footwork by Toussaint Rickets (two goals), and Viktor Vasquez (one), as well as Drew Moore, the Reds looked unstoppable against the lowly Galaxy.

Even with Giovinco, Altidore, and Berashour out of the lineup, the Reds had more than enough power to display as Ricketts & Vasquez made for a dandy tandem up front.  Vasquez was moved from his usual defence position to forward and he and Ricketts stole the show.

Unbeaten in 11 games, sporting an eleven point lead over second-place New York City FC in the overall standings, 62 points on the year, and with five games remaining, the TFC have a chance to get it all.

GO TFC!
