The Official TFC/Soccer thread

The Toronto FC becomes the 7th team in MLS playoff history to win both the Supporters Shield and the MLS Cup.

By winning the MLS Cup Championship, the TFC made history as quite possibly the greatest and best team in Major League soccer.  Having gone from being the "laughingstock" of a soccer team of years past to winning it all and setting records along the way this year, it has been quite a tumultuous ride for this Toronto soccer franchise over the years.

Jozey Altidore, named MVP and Player of the Game, scored the only goal the TFC needed to defeat the Seattle Sounders, in this rematch of the MLS Cup.  This time, Altidore & co., were determined to get past Sounders' 'keeper Stefan Frei, unlike last year's Cup game in which Frei starred.

Giovinco, Altidore, & Vasquez all contributed in the team scoring, with Vasquez heading the ball into the open net with just mere minutes in extra time, on a brilliant pass from Giovinco to Altidore who's shot hit the post for Vasquez's redirection.

Giovinco was also instrumental in having set up Altidore for the first marker.

It was a total team effort and no one wanted this win more than the Toronto FC.

Wow, what a game that the TFC thoroughly dominated, though Frei was excellent in net for Seattle, stopping dangerous shots aplenty.

Congratulations TFC!!!  You make us all proud!!!!    Whoaaaaaaa!!!!

Large turnout for the TFC celebration parade yesterday (Monday).  It was a day to not just celebrate their MLS Cup victory & their historic season, but also with a nod to their fans & all:

[tweet]940331213604220928[/tweet]

The importance of the fans is best illustrated by this statement:

...while many will point to TFC?s $20-million roster, the highest in MLS, as a driving factor behind the club?s success, it has been the constant fan support continually compelled MLSE to invest millions of dollars in the club?s salary while other MLS clubs spend a fraction of what the Reds do.

"...It show dedication of both the team and the fans....Once Bradley and Vanney came, that?s when it started to turn around. They were trying before that, but they didn?t have the right pieces of the puzzle, and now they do.?

None more than by Bradley himself:

To be able to lift that trophy,? said Bradley of MLS Cup, ?in this city, in front of our fans, to be able to give everybody a day like this, this is why every single one of us is here. This is the bets sports city city in the world. This is the best city in the world. And we love you guys so much. We can?t tell you enough. Your support and the way that you drive us on, what a difference that makes for us.?

In a move that stunned many members of Canada's national Women's soccer team, coach John Herdman, whose successful tenure in the country's soccer program is unprecedented -- The National Women's team is currently 5th in the world Women's soccer rankings - - was hired to guide the Men's national soccer team & program.

The Canadians Men's national team is currently ranked at 94th spot in the world Men's soccer rankings, and by hiring Herdman, Soccer Canada hopes to reap some of that polish that Herdman brought to the Women's program.

Replacing Herdman in taking up the vacant coaching position fir the Women's team is Kenneth Heiner-Moller, former assistant coach to Herdman.

On the Men's squad, Herdman replaces former national Men's team coach Victor Zambrano.

Its a great signing and a huge upgrade. If they can keep the core of stars together for the next 3 years it will give our development program a chance to bare fruit.  Do I hear the word Dynasty?

The Toronto FC are back!

The MLS Champions were in Colorado playing against the Colorado Rapids in a Champions  League CONCACAF matchup, -- First Leg -- and practically left where they took off from their MLS Championship win in downing the Rapids 2-0 last Tuesday (Feb.21st).

It was by all accounts the coldest soccer day on record -- a -10?C -- but not even the cold could stop neither Giovinco nor Osorio from scoring.  Throw in newcomer Auro with his blazing speed and the TFC looked formidable all over again.

The Second Leg goes Tuesday Feb. 27 at BMO Field here in Toronto.

The defending MLS Champions the Toronto FC, kicked off the 2018 MLS season with the home opener at BMO Field yesterday against the Columbus Crew, the team they defeated last season in the Eastern Conference Final before advancing to the  MLS Championship game.

This time though the Crew came to spoil the party -- the TFC celebrated prior to the game start, their historic season in which they won the Supporters Shield, the Canadian Championship,  and lastly, the MLS Cup.

Columbus shutout Toronro 2-0 and many TFC supporters came away disappointed. While not exactly a lackluster performance, the fact that the team hasn't scored in two games (this includes the scoreless Second Leg match against the Colorado Rapids, whom they
defeated on aggregate to advance to the CONCACAF Champions League Quarter-final).

For a team that lost only one home game all of last year and was the hottest scoring team and best  in the league, the zero number on the scoreboard isn't something fans are used to.

Striker Sebastian Giovinco thinks he knows the reason for this lacklustre show of goals:

"In the beginning it was not in a good way; we continued show the trophy, we continued to think about what happened last year," the star Toronto striker said as he blamed the loss on a poor team mentality. "I think, for me, this is no good."

"I think we have to change the mentality. We don't have to think about last year. We have to think about this year, and this year is more difficult."

TFC coach Greg Vanney had a different view:

"I'm not over the moon disappointed because I think there's a lot of information that is useable for me and us as a team coming out of this going into a series where we've got to be a little bit sharper than we were today, for sure,"

The TFC had some quality chances by Giovinco, Altidore, Auro, and Aketxe to get on the board but were stymied by both the Crew's goalkeeper and the post.

Victor Vasquez, so instrumental in last year's historic run, and a key cog in the TFC lineup,  left the game with an upper body injury.

The Toronto FC defeated Mexican powerhouse Tigres UANL 2-1 in the First Leg of their CONCACAF Champions League Quarter-final, at BMO Field in Toronto Wednesday evening.

Hometown hero Dominic Osorio scored the winner while Jozey Altidore potted the first goal earlier.  Sebastian Giovinco's key move made for the eventual winner.

Tigres was no slouch as their roster of international stars such as Chile's Vargas and Brazil's Juninho, and many others make for a team that's fleet of feet and sport some of the fastest-moving players in the game.  But alas, the TFC, champions in their own right themselves, stood toe to toe and pace for pace in their game strategy against this Tigres team.

Hooe the TFC can repeat in Monterrey next Tuesday (March 13) in the Second Leg of this Quarter-final.  Good luck, TFC!

Done!

The Toronto FC has advanced to the Semi-final of the CONCACAF Champions League as they won -- aggregate (4-4) -- on away goals, in their 3-2 loss to Tigres UANL last night in Monterrey, Mexico in this tournament's Second Leg.

Thanks to Seba's (Giovinco) marker on a beautiful side-kick, that enabled the TFC to obtain the advantage in the away goals department, and proved to be the winner for them.

Poise, discipline, and some super defence on the part of Chris Mavinga were instrumental in keeping the TFC on an even keel against Tigres, in spite of the fact that Toronto was out possesioned in this game and still came up a winner.

[tweet]973770153182801922[/tweet]

Playing in a hostile environment coupled with a higher altitude plus against a Mexican powerhouse would tax any team, but the TFC's remarkable agility and adaptiveness came to the fore for them.  Not even a very questionable penalty kick to Tigres (it was their go-ahead goal for the game) was enough to topple the resilient TFC. It was also a coming of age that a Canadian-based squad beat a Mexican squad, historic in fact, So much so that Mexican media dubbed it a disastrous loss of a champion Mexican team losing to an MLS squad.  Talk about respect.  Too bad.

While Tigres did score on an own goal and Giovinco's kick should have been a save (but wasn't) because a Seba kick is a Seba kick and often times not easy to handle, one can deduce this game as not being so lucky for them, so much as "disastrous".  Either way, it was Toronto's choice to come up as the winning team.

The TFC will play either one of Club America, another tough Mexican team, or, Panama's Tauro.

There is, BTW, another MLS squad the New York Red Bulls playing here in this tournament.  They too advanced by defeating Mexico's Tijuana in their Quarter-final matchup.

CONCACAF, I always thought they were saying copycat on the radio. I am a big "footie" fan encase you were wondering... Anyway, Toronto is a very diverse city and the team definitely has a loyal and eclectic following. Good for our MLSE brothers.

The Toronto FC return to action on Friday at BMO Field against Real Salt Lake.  It has been a bye week for TFC as several of it's players return from International duty.

On Tuesday April 3, a Mexican squad, Club America, comes to Toronto to play the TFC in the First Leg of the CONCACAF Champions League Semi-final.

GO TFC!

After having defeated Real Salt Lake at home Friday (March 30th) 3-1 in their first win of the season, the Toronto FC's next task didn't have an easy ring to it.

In the First Leg of the CONCACAF Champions League Semi-final played last night (Tuesday April 3), the TFC conquered all doubt about playing Club America, another powerhouse Mexican squad.  Goals from Giovinco, Altidore and Ashton Morgan powered Toronto to a 3-1 win before pouring rain and wind, in front of a raucous home crowd at BMO Field.

While the TFC appears to be somewhat struggling in the regular season, they left no doubt about themselves when it comes to winning in this Champions League tournament.  They remain undefeated at home in the games played here in this tournament and the latest win was testimonial to that.

But not before some controversy at the half.  There was a scuffle/skirmish that ensued in the tunnel between several TFC and Club America players.  In fact, the Mexican coach Herrera accused Toronto police of assaulting several of his payers..  Not so according to TFC coach Greg Vanney who was witness from start to finish:

"I was front and centre and saw everything," he said. "I'm not really going to digress into he said, she said."

Then Vanney said the incident began when a Club America coach interacted with Giovinco and Toronto FC's Jonathan Osorio came to his teammate's defence. Osorio, a 25-year-old Toronto native, said a Club America coach elbowed him in the nose.

"And then it escalated from there," Vanney said.

Osorio, sporting a nice bump on his nose, added: "There were two of their staff who were kind of harassing Seba [Giovinco]. I stepped in to say, 'Just relax,' and one of their guys kind of did a little cheap shot. It's OK, I took it and kept going. I didn't see any players involved. I don't know what [Herrera] saw, I saw him, I saw the head coach. He was there."

The Second Leg of this Semi-final goes next Tuesday (April 10) when the TFC plays in Mexico.

GO TFC!

Two and done!

Toronto FC ties with Club America at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City 1-1 in the Second Leg of the CONCACAF Champions League, and wins this Semi-final (aggregate 4-2) Tuesday night.

The TFC played perhaps among their finest performance defensively, as Club America practically owned the second half as they exerted offensive pressure in the zone.  Alas, it was probably the TFC defenders finest forty plus minutes as time and again, they made it difficult for the opposition to get any balls past 'keeper Alex Bono.  Bono, by the way, was Bono, making some exceptional saves in both halves.

TFC's Jonathan Osorio scored in the first half and it stayed that way until the Mexican squad was awarded a penalty kick courtesy of a TFC takedown.  The goal came with a mere few seconds of play left in extra time.

[tweet]983920449527730176[/tweet]

The TFC will now play Club Deportivo Guadalajara, another Mexican squad, in the CONCACAF Champions League Final.  The First Leg will be played in Toronto on Tuesday April 17.

Club Deportivo Guadalajara had defeated the New York Red Bull in their Semi-final 1-0 (aggregate).

The TFC meantime go on to Denver for a scheduled season game against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday (April 14).

WAY TO GO TFC!

Not this time.

The Toronto FC and Mexican squad Chivas de Guadalajara kicked off their CONCACAF Champions League Final at BMO Field Tuesday night (April 17), but it wasn't the results TFC wanted.  Guadalajara defeated TFC 2-1 here in the First Leg of this Final.

Chivas got on the board early -- 65 seconds into the matchup -- but Toronto's Jonathan Osorio countered twenty minutes in the half, becoming the highest scoring player (& Canadian-born) of this tournament.  Kudos to Osorio on that goal -- he headed thw ball while crashing bodywise into the post.  At least no one can fault him for trying.  It definely paid dividends.

The TFC had plenty of chances and opportunites to forge ahead but instead it was Chivas that ended up scoring the go-ahead & winning goal in the 72nd minute.  Too bad.

?At the end of the day, the score comes down to finishing your chances and not giving away goals you shouldn?t give away,? Vanney said.

Now TFC needs a wing & a prayer for the Second Leg to be played next Wednesday April 25 in Mexico.  TFC need to score not less than two goals and limit Chivas to zero, otherwise to overtime they will go.  Hope that doesn't happen.

The Mexicans are taking absolutely nothing for granted as far as their coach is concerned, considering TFC's winning performance so far in this tourney:

?There?s still 90 minutes left in this game. The result is still open,? he said.

GO TFC!

Heartbreak!

Toronto FC lose out in the shootout (4-2) and the CONCACAF Champions League trophy to Chivas Guadalajara. Wednesday night at Estadio Chivas.  Oh...that hurts...

TFC actually won this Second Leg  2-1 (aggregate 3-3) which forced the shootout on penalty kicks.  Chivas connected on all four of their shots, Toronto two out of four.

TFC lost the Championdhip but gained respect and admiration from a throng of MLS and Mexican League followers:

[tweet]989357533247823873[/tweet]
[tweet]989348214016020480[/tweet]

The Toronro FC had several players out of the lineup due to injuries,  most notably it's central defense -- Nick Hagglund, Chris Mavinga, Drew Moor, Zavaleta,  Hernandez, & Justin Morrow -- which forced coach Vanney to shift midfield defender Michael Bradley to centre, etc.

Even with all of that plus a "hostile" environment among Chivas supporters, TFC stood proud and played with heart right to the end.

Well,  it's been awhile since that heartbreaking loss in the CONCACAF Champions League Cup Final that TFC has been discussed or written about

As it stands, Toronto FC are in second spot in the East but fifteen points back of first place Columbus Crew. TFC played this same Crew team to a 3-3 tie yesterday at BMO Field here in Toronto.  Even though Toronto took a 3-0 lead at one point, they couldn't hang on to victory as Columbus scored three back to tie the game up (the tying goal on a penalty kick).

A very disappointing outcome for TFC considering that the defending MLS champions have been off to a disappointing start in their season and continuing that trend.

One of the reasons for this so far losing season are the injuries.  Count 'em -- Moor, Altidore, Morgan, Morrow, Zavaleta, Aketxe, and Mavinga.  That's quite a list.  (Coach Vanney expects Zavaleta & Morrow back in the lineup soon).

Giovinco, Ricketts, and Vasquez were the TFC scorers.  For Giovinco, who leads the league in shots, it was just his third goal of the season.  What does Seba have to say after having had successful scoring seasons including MVP?  The lack of Altidore is a factor.

Speaking of Altidore, he's a ways away from returning.  Hopefully with the rest of the sidelined on the mend, TFC's fortunes will improve so that a positive  turnaround in their season can be had.

2nd in the East??? What have you been smoking. TFC is 10th in the East and Atlanta, not Columbus, are in first. TFC is 18 points behind Atlanta but just 8 out of the playoffs.

I ain't smoking anything! :o .  (Never have, never will!).

In fact, that is exactly what I read -- TFC is still second.  Shouldn't have trusted the website, (not the one I posted), where that was stated, should have fact-checked the standings (which I had not).

Believe it or not, some media outlets (via subscription only) have made some factual errors and were corrected by their readers.  Yes, it happens.

P.S.  Sorry if it usurped your world.  ::)
