There Goes Datsyuk's NHL Career... Officially

Is Kessel's 1.2 per year tradeable? Wonder if Detroit would prefer a lower, yearly total to the single year 7.5 hit.

Sadly, retained salaries cannot be traded.

Are we really sure about that?

To be fair, Florida's not being run by Ken Holland. I don't think they set the market.

Probably not, but, we've also never seen a team try to move that much dead space in one deal. As much as Florida may not have set the market, the Savard deal is still going to be something other teams bring to the negotiation.

Sure, but the only real condition that matters is how eager Detroit is to move that salary. Ultimately I'm sure they'd like to but the Florida deal really smacks of trying to win with the exact group they've got around them. Like you said, Detroit's back isn't against the wall here. They have other options for moving salary and while Datsyuk's cap hit sucks, you don't actually have to pay him so it's not quite on a par with other bad contracts.

Is Savard's contract not paid by insurance?

I didn't think insurance paid the full amount but I could be wrong.

I think it's usually something like the insurance pays up to a certain amount. If that's per season, then they'd probably cover the rest of his deal as he just has the 1 year left at $575k.

So since Datsyuk would be suspended, and not paid, would that contract be an interesting asset for a team like Carolina?

I don't think any team is going to be that desperate to reach the floor. The only one maybe would be the Coyotes, but it's still too early to tell that because they really don't have many players signed and given their acquisition of Goligoski it's possible they'll throw money around at actual players this summer.

So while teams like that CAN take Datsyuk's contract, they're not going to be doing the Wings any favours. They'll still demand a possibly lofty price for it, as they should. It's a huge chunk of cap space, and teams should always try and have as much of it as they can.
