Sadly, retained salaries cannot be traded.

Probably not, but, we've also never seen a team try to move that much dead space in one deal. As much as Florida may not have set the market, the Savard deal is still going to be something other teams bring to the negotiation.
Sure, but the only real condition that matters is how eager Detroit is to move that salary. Ultimately I'm sure they'd like to but the Florida deal really smacks of trying to win with the exact group they've got around them. Like you said, Detroit's back isn't against the wall here. They have other options for moving salary and while Datsyuk's cap hit sucks, you don't actually have to pay him so it's not quite on a par with other bad contracts.

Are we really sure about that?

Is Savard's contract not paid by insurance?

I didn't think insurance paid the full amount but I could be wrong.
CarltonTheBear said:Actually, this article from 2012 about Crosby says that the NHL's league-wide insurance plan allows teams to be reimbursed 80 percent of that player?s salary if they qualify.
Frank E said:So since Datsyuk would be suspended, and not paid, would that contract be an interesting asset for a team like Carolina?
