Or Kapanen, for that matter.  I thought his work on the 4th line last year showed he can crash, bang, and dig just as well.

Yeah, maybe. I'd lean towards Leivo, mostly because of the size difference - as Matthews' line will be up against the other team's best most of the time, and the little extra size and/or strength could be what make the difference. Also, I'd kinda like to see Kapanen with Kadri as a kind of super pest line.

On a team icing balanced minutes in the top 9, adding more scoring to the Matthews - Nylander line pulls scoring away from the other lines. Hyman boxing out defenders to free up pucks for the 4th line = no goals, unless the 4th line is no longer a Martin line.

So I'd really like to see Leivo - Aaltonen - Brown/Kapanen on the 4th.

I actually think putting Leivo in for Hyman won't even be a wash in terms of scoring for that line.  As Bourne said, Hyman is in first fast and heavy, stopping the defender and generating loose pucks.  Leivo is heavy, but definitely not fast.  The extra goals he might score will be offset by a loss of production for Matthews and Nylander who won't get the puck in the offensive zone as often (off of dump ins especially)

Marleau on the other hand would be able to get on the defender quicker.  He might not play quite as heavy as Hyman, but I do think the line would score more total goals.  But will the Kadri line then score less?  Interesting conversation no doubt.  I do like what Hyman brings- I think he'd help the shutdown line a lot by keeping the puck deep- 200 ft from our net.

Personally I think I go with

Marleau - Matthews - Nylander
JVR - Bozak - Marner
Hyman - Kadri - Brown
Martin - Moore - Komarov

I don't think the Leafs invested in a 38 year old to send him into the corners first.

It will. Pens vs Preds in the final were two exhausted clubs at the end of a long war of attrition. Hopefully we eventually get that far!

The frustrating thing is that Babs seems unwilling to experiment.  It would be fun to see what would happen if Leivo replaced Hyman, or, if, say, Martin didn't play on the fourth line.

I'm sure there are human psychology reasons why he doesn't want to though.

Why fix what isn't broke.

I think the pretty easy answer is that while not broken it's still a team that got eliminated in the 1st round.  It still needs fixing and sticking with what got adequate results doesn't preclude trying to find better options.

Kapanen, Rosen are having a good camp... also liked Fehr.

Dominic Moore so far... not much.

Can't wait for the final cuts...

I  agree and think Fehr is a hell of a hockey player, also like Borgman and Dermott

Props to management for assembling this depth. Gonna come in real  handy down the stretch.

Jonas Siegel has a fairly high-praise article about Dermott in the Athletic today.  Included is a picture of Dermott looking ripped, the article has raised my hopes that this guy might be a keeper.

Siegel really loves talking about how ripped people are. Borgman is going to push Dermott and vice versa.

Also: great to see the Leafs prospect pipeline filling up with figure skating backgrounds (Bracco). Mighty Ducks!

Narcissism and hubris? Also, that gudproman fetish.

Leafs Notebook is back with some thoughts on the forwards:

1) I think Josh Leivo has earned a spot in the starting 12 so far. He has been a menace on the forecheck, consistently winning battles, causing turnovers and using his body to gain positioning and create offense. Playing primarily on a line with Aaltonen and Brown this preseason ? and considering the top three lines appear set ? that could be the opening fourth line (with a possibility of Moore replacing Aaltonen there). To this point, I just don?t know how you can?t start this guy on opening night.

2) I think, on that note, there probably has to be a conversation with Matt Martin that goes something like, ?You are going to play, and fulfill your role, and we will tap you on the shoulder and put you in when we need a boost, but it?s not going to be for 82 games again.? Not with this depth. I re-watched the Buffalo game he was in, and he had one play of consequence (driving a defenseman wide and centering the puck, which almost resulted in a goal). Compared to what Kapanen and Soshnikov bring on the PK alone ? or Leivo offensively ? he can?t take up a spot for the entire season at the expense of those three.

Thanks! I was just about to swing back around to update this.

I think we'll see one more Team Super Marlies game of the remainder of the preseason.
