NHL team plays Friday, and Polak debuts Saturday (which allays my fears).

Liljegren showed well in his limited action.

We have a cut!

As expected, Grundstrom is heading back to Sweden because of contractual/transfer agreement obligations.

Speaking of cuts:

Hyman cut his left hand fairly badly on Gallagher's visor during their tussle. Fighting is stupid.

Rosters need to be submitted to the NHL by 3pm tomorrow, so players who require waivers to go down will have to be placed on them at noon today. That means guys like Fehr and Smith, or more surprisingly Moore/Leivo/Marincin. Kerby Rychel and Sparks will also need to clear waivers to go down to the Marlies.

Why wait until noon (per @dcmahiban):

Aaltonen gets cut. No other surprises there. The roster is at 26 (14 forwards, 10 defencemen and two goaltenders), so more cuts are still needed.

Hyman-Matthews-Nylander
Marleau-Kadri-Komarov
JVR-Bozak-Marner
Martin-Moore-Brown
Fehr-Leivo

Rielly-Hainsey
Gardiner-Zaitsev
Marincin-Carrick
Rosen-Borgman
Liljegren-Polak

Andersen
McBackup

That's who's left by my count. Interesting that a decision on Liljegren hasn't been made yet.

I remember and I agree. Didn't think Hyman got that dinged up, but he did go directly to the dressing room after and kept playing the next period.

Not surprised by the Aaltonen cut, as the bonus cushion semi-dictates a limited number of new bonus-laden rookies and third pairing defense is more important than 4C. Also no surprised by Dermott getting top minutes with the Marlies.

Liljegren's delay might be a conversation with Rogle and his family about next steps.

Babcock mentioned over the weekend that Polak was a free agent and free to sign anywhere. I don't think he's in the plans.

I wonder if Soshnikov bolts if he isn't recalled fairly swiftly.

I recall reading he took a pay cut to play for the Leafs, that might not be as appealing in the AHL.

I wonder if the OHL/Niagara is back in the conversation here. Maybe the Leafs feel like he needs a year where he can just dominate. Didn't really seem to hurt Marner.

edit: Or maybe the hold up here is that they're waiting for London to trade for him. I'm only half-kidding...

I wouldn't be surprised if he dominated the AHL, skill-wise. Strength-wise, that's a bit trickier, but we have the most control on the Marlies for that sort of thing. If it helps off-ice, the team is also 20% Swedish, and I can see the team arranging something for his mom to ease the transition, a la Auston's dad.

Interestingly Bobylev and Korostolev were also cut by the Marlies, might be done with the Leafs org at this point.

ECHL? Korostelev goes back into the draft I think. We have Bobylev's rights until the coming June.

I'd expect him to be good in the AHL, but I don't know about dominating. They signed LoVerde, and while I don't know much about him he seems to be a top-ish level pairing AHL defenceman. And everybody around the Marlies seems to absolutely gush about Holl. So that's two righties right there who might even start the season ahead of Liljegren on the depth chart.

He's probably not playing 22 minutes a night with top PP and PK time with the Marlies, which is something he would almost certainly get on an OHL team.

AHL player numbers are a bit less structured, aren't they? They routinely have 3 games in 3 nights when extra bodies would be a blessing.

That said, you're certainly right that 22+ minutes in all situations in the OHL would be easy and welcome by the recipient team. I don't think the SHL would stand for it though. Only Oliver Kylington played junior hockey post-draft, and he was a late Rd 2 pick with no SHL contract at the time.

Kylington went straight to the AHL, no OHL time. But I'm fairly certain the Leafs would have the freedom to send him there. With that said Liljegren's agent pretty bluntly said he didn't think the OHL would be the best option for him earlier in the summer.

And as I'm constantly forgetting, the OHL put in new rules regarding the trading of import draft picks, so my half-joke about London acquiring him wouldn't be possible.
