Training Camp

Quick question, if Gardiner is around they have 24 on the roster, does that mean he is going on the IR and like in the previous CBA does that mean he needs to be on said IR for at least a week?

Nonis confirmed he will go on the IR  and I haven't heard about anything changing with respect to the IR rules.

So, did they announce the 23-man roster officially yet?  Wasn't the deadline at 3?

At 5pm

Thanks cw.

I googled the roster this morning and found the following link. I don't know anything about the website so I don't know how accurate it is..........

That might have been my fault, not sure where I heard 3 pm was the deadline.

Deadline was at 3, but the NHL changed it to 5 because some Western Conference teams were still going to be on the ice at 3 EST.

Should still be 7 days, yes, but I'm relatively sure that can be placed retroactively to the last time he saw game action.

I can't imagine Orr as a useful player, even if he has trimmed down.
As a coach of an opposing team, I wouldn't tell my players to deliberately go and hurt someone, but I'd let them know that James Reimer suffered a concussion that derailed his performance and might of been one of the biggest factors for the Leafs not making the playoffs.  And I'd also tell them to drive hard to the net.  Now if one of my players who just happens to have less hockey talent then Colton Orr goes a little overboard, it wasn't my fault he did what he thought he needed to do to stay in the NHL.

If my inclination is to do that, the other team dressing an enforcer doesn't stop me.

Seriously, what sort of coach do you think is alright with his players deliberately injuring another player/playing rough but is terrified that one of his players might get punched by Colton Orr for doing so?

One of the surprises of training camp has to be Colton Orr not only making the 23 man roster, but apparently earning a spot in the lineup.

In his honour here is a lookback to perhaps his finest hour as a Leaf, smashing Lucic's nose in.

Watch out for Lucic hiding behind the ref towards the end.

I didn't know they were carrying 9 d-men...8 plus Gardiner.

Perhaps would have carried Frattin and dropped one of Fraser/Holzer/Kostka...Eakins must be super pumped about his defense situation.

Maybe a Komarov in your lineup dictates the requirment for an Orr...  :-\

I think Orr making the team really is more about having guys on the roster who you're alright with sitting in the pressbox. Frattin's someone you want playing for the Marlies as opposed to sitting out but Orr's a guy you're alright with in a pinch but don't worry about sitting if you want more speed/defense with a Brown or a Steckel.

This is where Orr showed his fighting level as one of the best in the NHL because Lucic is one of the best fighters in the league and has beaten some legitimate heavy weights as well as useless goons.  As a 2nd line 30 goal scorer Lucic really should avoid these types of fights though with super heavyweights.

If Orr is looking to return to his NYR days of a crash and bang 4th liner reeking havoc and not the bulked up single dimension goon looking to fight every game than he helps settle the Leafs toughness issue in a hurry.

All I asked of the Leafs fighters is NO staged fights this year.  No exceptions!

I have like Colton since he was a Bruin.

I so much agree with Nik.

More generally, I'm just so skeptical that having an enforcer play bad hockey for 5 minutes a game on the 4th line is the thing that prevents other teams from trying to injure your 1st-line stars playing 20 minutes a game as is so often claimed.

Well, I think that having guys like Orr on the bench allows you, as a player, to feel a little more confident out there if things turn a little rougher on the ice...it's really more about his presence than how much ice he gets a game.

... And the fact that one often fights in weight classes is another indication that that a fighter isn't a guy who goes around distributing punishment to players on the other team based on the infractions they commit ...

I think the Leafs are very afraid of Fraser or Kostka being plucked off waivers, losing Aucoin may have made them a bit gun shy. Holzer is exempt and it wouldn't surprise me if he is the guy that goes down once Gardiner comes off the IR.
