Signing a free agent F and then trading him for players X and Y on other teams that you like more is just as good as signing X and Y from the start. It is an excellent and necessary way to build the team's talent base. I'd be perfectly happy if Burke plays the Beauchemin game over and over again several more times.
I'm not sure why the Beauchemin trade and the Beauchemin UFA signing can't be measured separately on their own merits.

I agree with what Parise's (I think) agent said today. Don't have the exact quote, but basically said that it is perfectly reasonable for a person to take a few days to decide on offers to go somewhere for 13 years.

Deebo said:I think Beauchemin was a decent signing who gave the Leafs serviceable minutes at a reasonable price and the trade has obviously worked out quite well.
I think he gets unfairly lumped in with the Komisarek signing, I thought he was much better than Komisarek in his time here and from what I've heard he's been decent for the ducks since he got back there.
As I recall, he also really suffered from being overused by Wilson. Though in Wilson's defense, and this will be one of the only times I will defend him, there wasn't much else on the blueline.Nik? said:Deebo said:I think Beauchemin was a decent signing who gave the Leafs serviceable minutes at a reasonable price and the trade has obviously worked out quite well.

I think I'd agree with that for the most part. I think he suffered some from high expectations as people, IIRC, sort of thought that outside of the Pronger-Niedermeyer shadow he'd turn into a top notch #2 but he was an ok middle pairing guy in his time here.

I'm still trying to figure out that one myself.

You invented this new variation on the old expression, so I'd say you're the world's foremost authority on it.
