Where to send Liles??

I'm starting to feel like we are the Flyers or something here.

Fortunately, Nonis hasn't been that level of stupid, but, buying out Liles is a short-term solution that has potential to re-create the same problem it's solving 2 summers from now.

Is there a limit to the amount of dead cap space a team is allowed to carry? I mean a bad GM could do some real damage to the future of a franchise if half their cap space was being used up with nothing to show for it on the ice?

The only limit is that teams can only have 3 contracts split between teams as a result of a retained salary transaction. Other than that, the only other limits are the cap ceiling, the reserve list and the roster minimums/maximums.

Thanks Busta. I wonder if we ever see a team drowning in dead cap space someday, because of poor management. It's not like you can just fire the GM to fix it either.

Well, that's why you don't usually see teams buying their way out of problems when there are still penalties attached to them - especially teams that feel they may be close to contending.

For what it's worth I think the Islanders are a stronger possibility than most people seem to think. They've obviously got cap space and they have got one cheap, patchwork looking defense right now.

True. They haven't done anything to replace Streit who leaves a big hole in their defense.  Liles could fill a good portion of that.  Bets on NYI being on Liles NTC list?

I mean, I guess it's likely but considering that they themselves had a pretty good year last year and their frugality has always seemed tied to their crummy situation in Nassau County which has been resolved....I don't know. There are worse places in the world to be a millionaire hockey player than NYC.

Makes sense, and you would think most GMs are smart enough to understand the implications of over extending that option, but....you never know.

Oh for sure. It's not like being dealt to a steerage room on the Titanic anymore.  it won't be that pretty for a while but there is light at the end of the tunnel there.

Aren't they moving to Brooklyn starting next next season too? (2015)

If the Ilses are on his no-trade list, his NTC can always be waived. I'd bet Liles would prefer a situation where he's on the ice every night rather than spending weeks at a time as a healthy scratch which might very well be the case if he stays in Toronto.

True dat.  He probably realizes he's not Carlyle's favorite player and would most likely be on the outs on most nights barring a miraculous start to the season where Liles lights it up and forces Carlyle to play him.  If a team really wants him he'd probably waive to go for a chance to play regularly.

Can they not put Liles on waivers and if he clears, just send him to the Marlies?  or is that not possible any more to make more cap space?

Not anymore in the new CBA.  You can only save about $925,000 on the cap if you do that.

OK , Thankyou  I should of read that earlier.

Evening chaps. Given that all the other teams would know we have cap issues and two players still to sign would we get anything useful in a trade for Liles?

Why not? The two most basic market factors are supply and demand, not supply and warehouse space.

Seems to me, what would make the most sense (if possible) is a trade where the Leafs retain $1.2 million of Liles salary for the next three years (instead of 6 years under a traditional buy-out). That would give them another $2.6 million to add to the Kadri/Fraser resigning efforts for about $7.4 million in total. That should be enough to get them both signed, particularly if either Kadri or Fraser were willing to take say a 3-year deal, where the money goes up a bit next year and the year after.
Liles at $2.6 million is not a bad deal for a team in need of some help on the PP, at a term of only 3 years. If the Leafs got a mid-round pick or a prospect in return that would be a bonus.
Moving Franson over Liles makes no sense. Franson, younger, bigger with more upside, not to mention a right-handed shot. The Leafs are loaded on the left side (Gunner, Gardiner, Fraser, Rielly coming)

Has there been any rumors or news about Liles to be traded? He has been a waste of cash since he got hurt. IMO he needs a change of scenery to prove himself again.

Not sure. Doesn't seem like there's much of a market for him though.
