What Tavares/Nylander and Matthews/Marner are good at is stringing lots of plays together, each one getting multiple touches to do creative and individually impressive things to get into scoring positions.
Matthews/Marner, to start, get to play with a world-class facilitator in Thornton or a world class forechecker/puck-freer in Hyman, and I think generally Rielly/Brodie at home, who are all good at making puck plays without really wasting the collective effort.
Nylander and Tavares are working with Vesey who can only touch the puck once before imploding, Mikheyev who will definitely shoot from a defenseman's position with his head down, and Bogosian who is... big (and attractive). So a lot of their work is turning into nothing plays most of the game. The ones that have really worked out so far are when they've forced a turnover (i.e. didn't involve too many other teammates).
