Yeah. And it's a sound strategy, providing they can find more UFA guys like Santo and Winnik, even Booth, every year. It's a good way to collect extra draft picks.

Franson.

So as the Leafs look to dismantle a high-priced core, the ability to either retain salary (which they didn't do with Franson and Santorelli)

Not bad and Winneck may be bought back this summer?

CarltonTheBear said:With the Leafs doing the Pens a solid by retaining salary and taking on Sill I think they should have probably been able to get a little extra out of the deal. Even a 6th or 7th round pick thrown in, I mentioned in the other thread how it's important to get as many picks as possible even late ones. But oh well.

Makes you wonder where we could have been had we been more proactive about Raymond & Kulemin last year. I understand that we were in a playoff spot at the time ... but it should have been a sign or trade decision with those two non-core type players.

Or is this further evidence of just how unwilling teams are to part with 1st rounders and that trade was more of a package deal than we've assumed?

Whatever happened to "we're going to wait until the deadline to get the best deal"?
I guess the second rounder is okay but it means waiting until 2016 unless we can trade it as part of a package. The fourth rounder is meh (we aren't the Red Wings when it comes to later round picks) unless we can package it.
As for the player (who dat?) Marlies material I suppose.
Count me as largely unimpressed other than it beats what we got for Kuleman & Raymond as pmrules has pointed out.

Well, perhaps 1st rounders are not available but the Kings just gave up a 1st round pick to Carolina so it can be done.
