While also going on to echo comments about his lack of offensive upside.  He said he could be a 2C who logs tough defensive minutes.  And I think the Leafs continue to prove that offensive production alone isn't going to get you far enough.

I think he has the makings of an excellent #3C. He has enough offence for that kind of role, and seems like he can excel with the defensive side of the role. I know, to some, that's underwhelming for a 1st round pick, but, a real high-end 3rd line centre is an important piece of a successful team.

Yeah, and was his draft considered particularly deep?  Expectatons for late first rounders can vary pretty wild year to year.

I don't believe so. He was ranked by most right around where the Leafs took him. At that point, in his draft year, they were knee-deep in "boom or bust" territory in terms of the more offensively skilled guys. The Leafs made the safer pick - and, considering the state of the farm system, I think that's totally understandable. If he can turn into shutdown type 3rd line centre, I don't think too many people will complain about it, though.

These Russians really are a pretty unlikeable bunch.

dirty, but pretty undisciplined too. Coach will probably rip them a new one in intermission (my son thought he may not feed them for a week if they keep it up and end up in the penalty box too much)

I think this could be a dangerous period for Canada.  Russia was trying to do too much at the beginning, but once they settled down, they started to take control.  Now that they will have had an intermission to set things straight, I don't expect them to be overwhelmed by the team nor the crowd.  Canada needs to stay focused and not play as if they are amped up still.
