Lordy!

For the first time in WWHC history, there will be no North American Gold Medal Game final.  Huh?

Yep, you read it correctly.

Team Finland usurped Team Canada 4-2 thus preventing Canada from appearing in a Gold Medal Game, extending our golden drought (since 2012).  For the enthusiastic Finnish crowd, it was witnessing history in the making -- it's Finland's first-ever foray in a Gold Medal Game in a WWHC tournament.

What a way to go, Suomi!

It is worth noting that Team Canada had been without leader & legend Marie Philip Poulin throughout this Championship.  She played sporadically but was largely insignificant.  Still not fully recovered from an injury suffered in February.

For Finland, thanks to goaltender Noory Raty who was simply superb in styming Canada's chances.  Team Finland parlayed a strategic game plan obviously unexpected by the Canadians.  Wow, what "miracle" indeed!

Other Semi-Final result (Saturday April 14)

Team USA blasted Team Russia out of orbit with an 8-0 shutout and advance to the Gold Medal Game against Team Finland.

These Americans know no end to scoring and my how the offensive scoring machine keeps right on chugging along.

Good job, USA!

Gold Medal Game:  Sunday April 14/2019

Team USA vs Team Finland

Bronze Medal Game: Sunday April 14/2019

Team Canada vs Team Russia

Tough loss for Canada on some questionable officiating, but overall it's good for women's hockey.
If women's hockey is ever going to be seen as a sport worth watching, they need more than two countries competing for the top spot. Teams are catching up.

Bronze Medal Game Results:

Team Canada whitewashes Team Russia 7-0.

Gold Medal Game Results: (Sunday April 14)

Team USA is golden again (make that #5) as they edged Team Finland 2-1 in the shootout.

Talk about heartbreak for the Finns!  Finnish netminder Nouri Raty was exceptional as the Americans outshot Finland 52-27.  So close only to lose in a shootout.  Ohhh!

Congratulations to Team USA on winning their fifth consecutive title.  They performed spectacularly well as they led the offensive onslaught throughout these WWHC.

Congratulations to Team Finland on winning the Silver.  Simply...wow!

That was total bullshit. The Finns were robbed. That OT goal, should have counted. How in the hell is a goal called off for goaltender interference and the ref calls it a goal and a penalty to the goalie for tripping?? The assclowns upstairs overturn the call on the ice. Terrible terrible terrible. And get this it took them like 12 mins to determine it. What a joke.

Yes, they were robbed.  (See my next post for the IIHF rulebook).

Here?s the IIHF rulebook that defines the rules for the different situations pertaining to a goal that is allowed or disallowed:

Jayna Hefford, Canadian hockey player & Olympian extraordinaire, is now leading the top job as ?Operations Consultant? of the PWHPA (Professional Women?s Hockey Players Association).  It is hoped that one day a true professional women?s league emerges with the support of the NHL.

?As a member of the PWHPA, our vision is to create a long-term viable professional league which will showcase the greatest product of women's hockey in the world, and Jayna is the perfect leader for this movement.?

A new league won?t just pop up immediately, but the PWHPA has organized at least six showcase tournaments throughout the upcoming season to allow fans and future stars to see their idols back on the ice. The end goal of building a league that is sustainable and desirable for women?s hockey players to play in requires buy-in and support from big name sponsors and the NHL.

Hefford spoke with ESPN?s Emily Kaplan and shared that she ?expects to have ongoing talks with the NHL about how they might be able to support or create a professional women's hockey league that satisfies their needs.?

It?s important to remember that the PWHPA isn?t simply asking the NHL to write a cheque, or that the players aren?t asking to be paid millions of dollars yearly. It starts with gaining proper infrastructure, resources, marketing and visibility, to make strides towards a sustainable and viable league that young girls will dream of playing in one day.

Just looking at ordering my tickets for the IIHF World Championship. 17 games including both semis, the bronze medal game, and the final, and that's for a prime seat that's just behind the player's bench all for $400. Could you even get a single ticket to a mid-season, mid-week, crappy-opponent Leaf game at that price?

If we could, we?d all be going. 🙂
