Interesting to see the difference in spelling for Kulemin's name.

For this tournament it's spelled "Kulyomin".

Why aren't we (meaning the Leafs) spelling it that way?

Cool.

Maybe the Leafs should adopt that spelling.

Fresh start and all.

He goes from a "Cool Lemon" to a "Cool Yeoman".  :D  Not bad, not bad at all.

Not from the WC, but I don't know where else to post it:

That link takes me to some article from 2007.  ???

That should take you to the proper article.  It's essentially spelling the Russian name phonetically because Semyon Varlamov got sick of being called Semen Varlamov.

It was a problem where '?' was being translated to 'e' when it should really have been translated to a 'yo' coming out of Cyrillic to english.

Kulemin's cyrillic name 'Кулёмин' should be translated Kulyomin rather than calling him Nikolai Kul-uh-min

Thanks for that.

Canada gets knocked out first round and they get a favourable grouping? Another reason the World Championships don't really matter?

Seriously. Russia won gold and ended up in what might be the toughest of the 3 groups.

Apparently Norway's surprise ascension threw things for a bit of a loop.

Norway finished 8th out of the top-9 teams. Even if they were ranked 9 and Switzerland moved up to 8th Canada would still be in a pretty decent group.

It could be argued that having the top spot on the IIHF rankings actually puts you in the most competitive group. Right now, there are 7 countries that seem to have separated themselves from the rest. Each of the three group gets 2 of those top-7 teams, with Group A getting the final one (US) and Group's B and C getting the less competitive teams in Norway and Switzerland.

The groups for Sochi are based from the IIHF World Rankings. The rankings on results at the Worlds and Olympics over a 4 year period.

Hockey Canada's Bob Nicholson a possible shoo-in for the IIHF presidency, and, IIHF current president Rene Fasel possible replacement for eventual outgoing IOC President Jacque Rogge.
