World Championships

To be honest I think that he is completely correct about one thing, which is:
"We can't pick and choose when being on top is important. "

Sure we can. A sporting event has to earn it's importance by being a credible contest of something people care about. You can't just slap a Hockey Canada logo on something and pretend it has gravitas.

Nobody wrings their hands over the Spengler or the U-18's or the Women's WC either. If there were a Canadian team left in the Playoffs people would barely notice. No one will get too riled up so long as Canada's best still beats everyone elses best.

Then how do you feel about JWC? because that's pretty much the same thing. There are several guys who don't get to the tournament since they're stuck on their NHL-teams.

Btw Canadians seemed to be quite interested when winning the gold in the World Championships, so I think it's more related to what kind of success you have in the tournament.

It really is of no significance, but what I do agree with Stebro on is that usually the significance of it is determined in the media by whether Canada do well or not.  Win it and it's a good feather to have in your cap and lose in the Quarterfinals and it is a two bit tournament that you don't care about.

More or less the same way although it's less random. The 19 year old Slovak equivalent of Zdeno Chara's participation in the WJC would depend mainly on his own ability/readiness for the NHL rather than his team's concerns as opposed to the real Chara whose presence in the WC is largely the result of a Joel Ward OT goal.

I mean the only year the WJC was really best on best was 2005 and Canada turned that tournament into a hand puppet.

Outside of the sports media I don't know if I've ever heard anyone talk about the WC in Canada. Even a gold medal doesn't register with anyone but hardcore hockey fans.

I can only speak for myself and I think this thread shows I'm consistent about how I regard it win or lose. That said "It's nice if they win, who cares if they lose" doesn't strike me as contradictory. That seems like what you say about sporting events that don't carry weight.

You'll probably hear a similar sentiment about hurdles or the shot-put during the Olympics.

Team US going home too, Finland scored winning goal with 8 sec. left
Felt sorry for Team USA, they deserved a better destiny in this tournament.

Yup, on Leafs related note, I liked the way Joey Crabb played.
Yeah, he played aggressive, skated well and seemed very hungry.

So, this is, like, a national disgrace, right?

I dearly hope that half the media people out there are all midway through 10-page diatribes on what is wrong with Canadian hockey.  That is, when they are done with their essays on shot blocking and the mean/nasty John Tortorella.

Congrats Czech Republic, once again our D was very shaky. Hedman stinks, Kronwall was awful too. Oh, well now I hope that Czech Republic or Slovakia will win the tournament. We didn't have one single pp, but I think that the officiating was quite good, and Czech Republic played with a lot of discipline.

I really hope that our coach will get the boot now, I don't ever wanna see him on Team Sweden again.

Good game Stebro. BTW, Loui Eriksson is one of the most underrated Swedes. He has been superb in Dallas for last three years and he was by far the best player for Sweden at this tournament as well. I would love to have him in blue and white. As usaul the Czechs have a bunch of relative no names and pull it off.

Interesting to see the difference in spelling for Kulemin's name.

For this tournament it's spelled "Kulyomin".

Why aren't we (meaning the Leafs) spelling it that way?

Semin started to show some nice chemistry with Datsyuk in the tournament, Red Wing bound potentially? I think they could use a pure goal scorer like him.

Russia wins gold with a 6-2 victory over Slovakia, while Czech Republic took the bronze in a 3-2 win over Finland.

Prior to today, Mikko Koivu had won a medal in 11 straight international events. That's pretty impressive. Two Olympic medals and a top-3 finish in the World Cup included there.
