World Juniors 2021

Checking in halfway through the Austria-Sweden match and Austria has register one SOG
It's kind of crazy to me the chasm between the top 6 hockey teams in the world and the rest. Teams at the bottom generally just play musical chairs of relegation/promotion.

If you want to check in on how Leafs prospects are doing specifically, Kyle Cushman is doing some nice work stringing the clips together per player, per game.

Canada 10-0 over the Swiss. Shots 52-15. Not much of a game really.
I know everyone goes on about how great this tournament is but we're in such an easy grouping that we may as well not be playing. It's not fun to watch.

They should get challenged against the Finns. Other then that it's pretty much watch a period and go watch something else.

I turned it off at 5-0. It was like watching a knitting competition.

I feel like my enthusiasm for this tournament declines as I age. Especially the more and more TSN hypes it up as a big deal in the way that sports channels seem obligated to do with everything these days. You're watching kids, most of whom haven't made any money yet representing their countries so it's really hard for me to be invested in who wins or loses.

I still get it from a "scouting" perspective and how it can be fun to see some of these guys we've only heard of but I wish it felt less like big business.

I think one of the things that I started losing interest in was when it was an obligation that you had an NHL rink to be a host city.  The event became about making money as much as being a best on best prospect tournament.  I know back when London and Windsor made a combined bid in 2016 they had to offer a 10 million dollar profit guarantee after expenses and even that wasn't enough.  The London/Kitchener bid in 2006 had similar issues getting off the ground with Hockey Canada.

Hirvonen plays net front/behind the net on the PP and crashes the crease on the regular, despite his 5'7" build. Judging by how often Slovakia is tackling him, he must be quite chatty. He (finally) cashed a goal off a broken scramble but had it waved off because the 1st period buzzer had sounded.

Niemela with another PPG a delayed penalty goal

Needs one more point to maintain his 2 points per game pace for this tournament (+ exhibition)

Edit: and I think he just got it, now that he's been bundled up with the top line (instead of the third)

Siemontaival gets a gift for his efforts (it's a good hard move when everyone is expecting a one-timer), while snakebitten Hirvonen has a great view of the puck going in

LMAO Hirvonen getting absolutely stuffed again

Should've gone shortside middle, buddy

Hlavaj deserves a better result, but he's been keeping Slovakia in this

Sandin has this as well

There was a a narrative out there at the draft the Niemela had limited offensive upside. For the most part, I think that is because he was playing in Liiga instead of junior. Niemela's real offense is from keeping pucks in dangerous (for his team) ice

6 points in 3 games would have him tied for the tournament lead in scoring for a defenseman.  Not bad.
