I'm just glad Arizona took Strome instead of Marner.

If Arizona did choose Marner, I wonder if the Leafs would have chosen Hanafin though.  Marner was definitely Hunter's guy.  Hanafin was Babcock's.  Who knows if anyone was truly in love with Strome in the org.

Wasn't there a draft day video of the CBJ table, where Dubas rang up Kekalainen with an offer of the 4th for their 8th + all their seconds, if Marner didn't drop to 4th? I think they were eying Werenski/Provarov as the backup plan.

I think I missed that.  Would love to see it if anyone can dig it up.

If so, proof positive they weren't in love with Strome and probably felt the difference between Hanafin/Werenski/Provorov was pretty small so they'd rather get more assets by dropping down.

I think Leafs fans would have lost their shit at the time had it played out that way.  Alot of people here were clamouring for Strome as they thought he'd be a 1st line center.  He still might be, but man, if we lost out on Marner I'd much rather have Hanafin or Werenski+ over Strome in retrospect.

We had a thread about it earlier but Google is easier.

Woll (and Bracco) pick up the 5-2 win for the US against Slovakia.

Grundstrom set up the game winner in Sweden's 4-2 win over the Swiss.

Martins Dzierkals makes it 2-9 en route to Latvia's loss to Canada. He was named Player of the Game, and is playing through the remnants of an ankle injury.

I'm now imagining how fast he'll be when his injury clears up and his skating stride is optimized.

Jesus Pierre-Luc Dubois flicked the puck into the US net after a whistle and gets a 2-minute penalty. I know it's a nothing play but everybody knows that stuff isn't allowed in hockey. US gets a powerplay late and they're already up 3-1.

And now a pair of too many men penalties for both benches, taken a few seconds apart. The one on Canada seemed iffy.

Oh woeful, Canada.  Team Canada loses 3-2 to Team USA, leaving many to wonder whether this team ever had it's mind on this game in the first place.

The opportunistic US squad took sharp advantage of several Canadian penalties and converted on their powerplay.  The opposite was true of Canada, as the Canadians failed to convert on their chances.  Leaf prospect Jeremy Bracco scored the goal that gave the US the lead again, and it seemed like that is all the Americans needed to seal the victory.

Canada left gaping holes in her defence, and goaltending wasn't very inspiring either, as netminder Connor Ingram got better as the game wore on, but by then it was too late for Canada to have any chance of a comeback.  The US could have easily upped their lead when Ingram made a highlight save on a US breakaway.

Losing ace defenceman Philippe Myers is going to be a blow for Team Canada in the backend and at the point. Myers was rammed into the boards and left the game due to a possible concussion.

Too bad for Team Canada, as lack of discipline, poorly executed plays, and a lack of momentum did them in.

Canada finishes second to first place US.  The US plays Switzerland in their Quarter-Final while Team Canada faces the Czech Republic in their Quarter-Final matchup Monday.

I love the Columbus table after the Leafs first pick. "wow... Marner..." Apparently they were underwhelmed.

I read that more as relief. If we had picked Hanafin, or Provorov, or even Werenski, they would've been sad panda.

Something strange happened at the Quarter-Final Game played at the Centre Bell in Montreal.  No, it wasn't the well-deserved boos that rained down on Team Canada after trailing 2-1 in a lethargic first period.  Nor was it that oh-so-weird Czech opening goal that bounced off the Slovak referee's helmet and onto the arm of Canada's defenceman Kase Clague past a stunned Connor Ingram.  None of that.

Give up?  It was the announced crowd of 10,000 in the seats.  Many of Team Canada's players were surprised at the non- sellout, but, to make amends, the crowd got louder and more boisterous as Canada started racking up the lead, much to the satisfaction of the Canadian players.

Canada took the lead on a pair of goals by Julien Gauthier, Mitchell Stephens, Blake Speers, and Thomas Chabot, who has been a stalwart on the defence and all-around, particularly with the absence of the concussed Philippe Myers.

The Canadians trio of Pierre-Luc Dubois, Nicholas Roy, and Julien Gauthier, --also known as the "Quebec Line" or "The Monstrous Line" (for the fact that these three comprise Team Canada's biggest forwards) and placed together by coach DuCharme for the first time in this game, -- were instrumental in bringing some tempo and momentum to Canada's offence, as they capitalized well in the offensive zone.

Final score was 5-3 Canada over the Czech Republic.

Team Canada will now play Team Sweden in Wednesday's Semi-Final matchup.
