We all know the story of Jerry Lewis? THE DAY THE CLOWN CRIED, his film about a clown who entertains Jewish children on their way to gas chambers in Nazi death camps during World War II. Yeah, just that sentence says everything there is about why this film was never released to the public, and why the atmosphere surrounding it is a blend of appall, intrigue, and morbid curiosity. Only a handful of people have ever even seen the completed film, and their general consensus has always been a resounding ?Meh,? which somehow only increases the mystique of the film.

Lewis himself has kept the film from the public since it was shot in 1972, but last fall it was announced that the Library of Congress has acquired it along with the rest of Lewis? filmography and has his permission to release CLOWN to the public ? but not until 2024. For those of us chomping at the bit to see just what the hubbub is all about, that?s a pretty long wait. But now ? and I emphasize now because there?s no way this clip lasts more than 24 hours online before it?s taken down for copyright something or another ? that wait has been tempered with the release of a condensed, 31-minute version of the film edited from a German documentary about the film entitled DER CLOWN. YouTuber Donazify is responsible for this compressed look at Lewis? minorpiece, and yeah, it?s as weird and uncomfortable as we were all thinking. The wait for 2024 just got a little harder.
