Love that they used Groundskeeper Willy for the Leafs... an ode to the Toronto St. Pats past?

That would be Groundskeeper Seamus

Mirtle...NHL's cap could well rise $6-million+ both this summer and next, hitting $76-million by 2015-16. Floor would be about $20-mil less.

This would be great news for spend-to-the-cap teams like the Leafs.

Mirtle's got next season's cap at around $70.6-million.

TSNBobMcKenzie: However much salary cap increases, DET won't be able to take full advantage. Wings have more than $3M in bonus overage carrying forward.

Mirtle said Boston and New Jersey will both be looking at $3mil-ish overages as well.

Hemsky rejected a 3 year 10 million dollar contract.  If he ends up coming in somewhere around 3.5M that would be an intriguing acquisition.

You have to pay the piper eventually. I also agree with Mirtle; that some teams are probably in position to gamble like that, but Detroit and New Jersey were not in that position.

How much of Detroit's problem was their absurd injuries though?  I think that had more to do with Detroit's struggles than anything else.

Seems like a pretty low-ball offer from the Sens. I imagine he'll likely get $4mil. If we hypothetically traded Lupul or Clarkson suffered a career ending injury that still allowed him to live a non-hockey but still fulfilling life I would definitely take a run at Hemsky. But as things stand we have enough money tied up on our wings.

There was a glimpse of them slowing down two seasons ago also, wasn't there? I don't see them as a threat to win the cup anymore, like they were before.

mirtle: Told the Bruins may have gone over the cap by as much as $5.5-million this year. Depends on how many bonuses Iginla, Krug and Hamilton hit.

Injuries definitely played a role, but, looking at their roster, they should have expected some of them. They filled the team with a lot of older and/or injury prone players. Even healthy, I'm not sure they would have had enough steam to do a whole lot of damage in the playoffs. I'd say this cap penalty is the result of a team that didn't accept that their window has probably closed and that they're entering into a transitional period.

They should be forced to trade Bergeron to us for Clarkson as punishment.
