@BlueJays

Michael Saunders has suffered a torn left meniscus. He is likely out until the All-Star break.

The life of a Jays fan.

Awesome.

Best part is that he suffered it stepping on a sprinkler head.

The Toronto Blue Jays have lost Michael Saunders, their new left-fielder, until sometime close to the all-star break after he stepped on a sprinkler head and tore the meniscus in his left knee while shagging flies during batting practice Wednesday.

This of course a season after Maicer Izturis played 11 games and then was out the remainder of the season after tripping on the dugout stairs.

So...Kevin Pillar AND Dalton Pompey in the same outfield on a regular basis.

Navarro for an outfielder or still hold out for pitching???

Wow, Saunders is hurt? That is pretty shocking news. In an unrelated story, the Pope is still Catholic.

And then there's this:

I know that a sprinkler head doesn't necessarily equate to this supposed crate in the outfield but you would think that if players have complained about the field in the past that the team would look into it BEFORE you lose one of your outfielders for half the season.  I really am not optimistic about this team.  They don't have the pitching to win long-term and I having 2/3 outfield positions with a combined <300 career at bats isn't exactly screaming confidence.  I liked the addition of Andy Dirks but it doesn't look like he will be healthy enough to even start the year in the minors let alone win a spot out of camp (he's only on the Minors camp invite right now).

It's so early in his Jays tenure that TSN doesn't even have a picture of him in a Jays uniform yet.

Just use Lupul's picture, same diff.

This isn't really fair.

Saunders' injury history:

2014

May 10 ? Hyper-extended knee in the outfield. No DL time. Missed a few games.
June 6 ? Shoulder strain suffered by swinging a bat. Missed three games. Came back and was clearly in pain. Placed on the DL on June 11. Missed 14 games and returned on June 26.
July 10 ? Suffered a strained left oblique on check swing in a game against the Twins. Placed on the 15-day DL on July 11.  During his rehab stint, he contracted with Fifth Disease while on paternity leave. Sat out five days and pulled off his rehab stint. Finally recalled on Sept. 7. He missed 50 games.

2013

April 10 ? Suffered a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder, crashing into the wall while make a catch. Activated on April 28 ? missed 17 games.
June 29 ? missed five starts with a sprained/cut finger from being spiked in a game. Did appear as a pinch hitter.

2012

August 24th ? Strained groin on a collision with a catch with Eric Thames. Re-aggravated the strain on August 31. Missed a total of 11 games with the injury.

So from 2012 to now he's missed 65 games due to injury, plus 5 starts where he was still able to pinch hit.

He had missed around 20 games (hard to pinpoint exactly when his rehab assignment began) last July/August due to his oblique injury but had appeared in 10 games in the minors as part of his rehab assignment when he contracted Fifth's Disease from his newborn daughter.  He lost 12 pounds from that and wasn't activated from the DL until September 8 as a result of the infection.

Just for simplification/clarification.  Think of Fifth's disease like catching the flu (for adults).

They're saying he's going to start baseball activities in 7-10 days and hopes to join the Major League camp later in the spring.

Good to hear.  The last I read was that he had a setback and wasn't going to be ready for camp until the Minors break camp.  Hopefully he can work his way back into game shape but I still wouldn't bank on him being ready for the start of the season.  At least ready to provide meaningful contribution.

Agreed, I don't think he'll be ready for start of the season.

Crummy start to spring training.

The decision to let both Melky and Colby walk instantly shows the huge hole on the outfield depth chart.  I could live with Pompey or Pillar taking up one of the outfield spots.  I hold my reservations seeing both of them out there for anything more than a couple of weeks.  At least for a team that aims to contend.

Quite clearly he's got one of those knees that's uniquely vulnerable to sprinklers.

Quite clearly he finds ways to continually be injured, whether it be by the freak or non-freak variety.
