So he took a paycut from his qualifying offer at the NHL level, but a bump at the AHL level. Smart.

If he gets close to enough games in meaningfully, they might want to shut him down, if not, well that's up to him.

Why would they shut him down exactly? Las Vegas doesn't have to choose a player that fits the 40/70 criteria, we just have to expose players (2 F, 1 D) that meet it. They can still choose someone that doesn't meet it.
Edited to add:
In fact, it would be a blessing in disguise if he met the criteria, because as of right now the only forwards we have signed into '17-'18 that will conceivably meet the 40/70 criteria that we won't want to protect starts and ends with Lupul- if he stays healthy enough. Otherwise, we'd need to trade for someone to meet the criteria or sign one of Michalek, Greening, or Laich to a 1yr contract extension to meet the criteria and then hope they get selected or we are stuck with having to trade, bury, or keep them on the roster another year.
(This assumes we are protecting Kadri, JvR, Komarov, Brown, Martin, Bozak, and Holland up front)
