2017-2018 NHL Thread

Well they did the bare minimum of what was acceptable to me, but still not really something to celebrate.

Hall not being injured in any way probably saved Burrows' ass, which is dumb.

Smith and Kruger are pretty surprising names to see on the waiver wire.

Smith was a guy I really liked in the playoffs and thought the Leafs should look into him when he was an UFA this summer, but the contract he signed is too big for me (4 years, $4.35mil AAV). Very weird that he's on waivers. It doesn't seem like he's having a great season but it hasn't been awful either.

I didn't realize just how bad the Rangers have been from a possession standpoint. They're last in the league in CF% at 45.8%. They have just a single player over 50% and it's Zibanejad at 50.5%. Their 6 regular defencemen all range from 46.7%-45%. They are still technically in the playoff race thanks entirely to Lundqvist but even that is fading fast.

Kruger could be intriguing, but we're at 50

4 years, 17.4million and they put him on waivers in the same season.  And we thought Matt Martin's 4 year deal was bad, at least he made it into year 2.  ;D

Cap hit is too high for what he brings - especially since there's another season on the contract. But, if the Canes are willing to flip him for Martin, it might be worth contemplating, as it would only be an increase of ~$600K.

Speaking of the Rangers, they just tweeted this out:

Funny they feel like they need to write a letter to fans telling them they're gonna rebuild.  Just do it, people will catch on like we did here in Toronto.

I don`t like the letter. Fans aren't idiots. This is totally unnecessary. I remember Larry Tanenbaum posted a we're sorry letter after not making the playoffs for the millionth time.

Actually, the letter is very well done.  Whether they needed to write it is another issue.

Jack Johnson has requested a trade from the Columbus Blue Jackets because he no longer believes that they are better together.

A 1st rounder?!? I wouldn't give up banana pancakes for him.

edit: But seriously any GM that gives up a 1st rounder or equivalent for Jack Johnson needs to be fired ASAP.

https://theathletic.com/235071/2018/02/09/the-canadiens-were-interested-in-comparing-weber-to-subban-long-before-the-trade/

Prior to The Trade, the Canadiens analytics consultant at the time, Matt Pfeffer, argued to keep Subban, as Sportsnet?s Eric Engels first reported. His recommendation was ultimately ignored, and his contract was not renewed by the Canadiens. Pfeffer was subsequently hired by the Predators.

What was not widely known was that the Canadiens had commissioned a report seeking a comparison of Weber and Subban from a hockey analytics provider a month prior to The Trade, a report dated a day before the trade was consummated. The Athletic has acquired that report.

LOLOLOLOLOLLLLLOLOLLOLL

Optics aside, the purpose of the report was ostensibly to evaluate a potential analytics service provider and comparing Subban to Weber in the context of Team Canada's World Cup roster.

Any other sport on the planet and that's, at minimum, a quarter of the season.

Any environment outside of sports and that's assault and jail time.  There was no hockey play involved there.  There was no agreed fight there.  We need to stop protecting athletes who "see red" and get away with violence for the hell of it.

Agreed, LK. This macho bullshit needs to end. It's a game. There's no excuse for kneeing or punching someone in the head, especially one who clearly isn't interested in giving it back.
