2019-2020 NHL Thread

I'd give Chara more of the benefit of the doubt if he hadn't been a dirty player for like his entire career or whatever.

You say dirty. NHL head office says tough, plays with heart, and can't be faulted for being so much bigger than Gallagher.

Forget suspensions and fines, the fact that the result of that hit were coincidental minors is the real crazy thing.

I like how they have to keep mentioning that $5,000 is the maximum allowable under the CBA. Otherwise, it just seems like an amount not even worth doing.

Player crosschecks Boston Bruin in the collar: playoff series suspension
Boston Bruin player crosschecks player in the neck: that?s (a) fine

Hah! See! The NHL DOES take this stuff seriously!
How many times could he do this to Gallagher in a game and break even on fines vs. salary?

Good question. Chara has a relatively low salary this season compared to what he's used to. It's just $2mil. So he could only afford to cross-check Gallagher in the neck 5 times per game.

That's banana's, for sure, but keep in mind that it's part of the collective bargaining agreement...guaranteed the players had something to do with setting this number.

For sure.

Also if Chara came back for another season and signed at a $1mil AAV he could afford to cross check Gallagher in the neck once every single day of the regular season and still make about $70k.

The power is getting to your head, you should get a blue "MTMLFGA" hat.

Can you write-off the fines?  I wonder.

This is a good question. Technically the money goes into the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund. I'm not sure if that's a registered charity or not but a good accountant could probably figure something out.

It's a business expense.

Can you write-off speeding tickets as a truck driver? Should be the same answer.

Hockey players are considered to be employees, not as independent contractors.

Not all trick drivers are independent contractors. Hockey players can incorporate themselves so I'm not sure you are correct??
