2019-2020 NHL Thread

I just would have figured that a guy who follows hockey enthusiastically would have had more familiarity with many of these guys.

They?re twins! And like not old enough. I recognize the names but other than the Leaf players and the top 15 or so, they?re unrecognizable to me at Phaneuf age.

Oh, for sure, clearly not old enough, in retrospect. It's kind of funny and cool that people can get a reputation for having useful insights without their outright age and an associated presumption of time-based experience coming into play.  I didn't know (or recall) that they're twins.  I think hockey statistical perspectives that aren't seasoned by many decades of hockey watching can be pretty useful.  For that matter, one can argue the same about hockey perspectives in general that also aren't so seasoned.

I mean, in a way, that kind of makes it dumber. Not for you but if someone's too young to remember guys who had legit NHL careers it seems strange to look at a 26 year old NHL draft and then be like "Well, it's before my time."

Jim Benning apparently offered Dave Bolland a contract larger than the 5 year, $5.5mil one that he signed with Florida back in 2014.

Given the financial strain of these times, I'm wondering if those marginal US markets become targets for purchase and relocation.  2nd Toronto team back on the table?

It's also been pretty quiet on the Seattle front.  I wonder if that gets delayed...

Really loving the Buffalo exit interviews

The Pegula's were rolling in cash with all their natural Gas and fracking wells.  Terry said that if he needed more money he would just drill another well.  I have a friend in AZ who is one of Terry's best friends and he made a fortune in Natural Gas as well.  However when the price dropped out Terry had to cap his wells.
Kim and him have a opulent lifestyle and have had to put some of their luxuries on hold, like a huge megayacht under construction in Europe.
I am sure that the atmosphere in Buffalo is completely toxic now... The Bills management are under pressure as well but seem to be running a fairly independent shop at least for the time being, unlike the Sabres where Kim has been in charge.

I'm curious as to why this is even a noteworthy thing.

Is this guy super valuable, or is the hockey media just hungry for anything to write about?

Well the draft seems to be the only thing the Canucks have done right in recent years so losing him, when it seems like he really would like to stay, is a pretty big blow. Especially for the group of fans who really don't trust Benning very much.

The fact that a report came out that Brackett was instrumental in the Canucks drafting their franchise player (Pettersson) when others in the organization wanted to pick Cody Glass doesn't help things.

Not that it matters a ton but there are quite a few NHL players speaking out about the current situation. Mainly the few of colour but also some like Blake Wheeler, Logan Couture and others:

I'm kinda sad seeing exits at TSN but what can you do?

Meh, he's not terrible, but I always think his style is a bit milquetoast. As an example, the "golden goal" call was pretty weak, for a home country broadcast. Some of the other calls around the world were way better (and fun)

Yeah I see what you mean but I wonder if that's more of a specific regional thing. I mean I'm not sure that Jim Hughson would have called it with any more excitement, unless it was a Canucks player who scored the goal that is.

This also reminds of me of this classic Simpsons clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjp1Zrvn8VQ
