2020-2021 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

The Athletic's Michael Russo is reporting that the Leafs and Boudreau have finally spoken about him taking an assistant coaching job here.

As I said before, all coaching gigs for next season seem to be taken right now. Boughner still has the interim tag in San Jose but it looks like he'll get the job officially soon. And Bowness has the interim tag in Dallas but the head coach job next season is basically his if he wants it.

So the options for Boudreau are to take an assistants job and re-examine his choices next offseason or wait for the first head coach to get fired next season and take whatever (potentially) crap job that is.

I just worry that if this happens, and the Leafs are in any kind of slump, the media will be all over the "Fire Keefe put Boudreau as head coach" train within 2 seconds.

I mean that might be true but the media will be out for Keefe regardless any time the Leafs go into a slump.

The Toronto media over reacting to a Leafs slump?  I think you're making that up.

"Leafs lose home opener, time for Boudreau to take the reigns?"

The Leafs could run with zero assistant coaches and they would start the "fire Keefe" engines up if the Leafs struggle at any point in the season.  I'm not sure that the team should really be making moves based on what Steve Simmons is going to write about.  The reality is that the media are going to dump on every single mediocre thing because Sheldon Keefe, Kyle Dubas and the overpaid kids are responsible for 1967-2020.

I hope he comes home. He would be a huge asset to the Leafs.

We could have no viable head coaching options and they would still call for Keefe's head.

Babcock got fired for the team result, but Keefe didn't really get any more out of them.

Dubas now has his coach in place, and I think it's Dubas that goes if things don't go well this coming season.  I really don't think Shanahan will have much choice.  But that's also why I think they swing for the fences with a big move on defense, even if it costs them a big forward.

That doesn't sound like an accurate read on either Shanahan or Dubas, or the reason Babcock was dismissed. Babcock got fired for his disconnect from the front office and then the subsequent lack of results.

Keefe took a team that had .478 winning percentage (25th in the league) and a 48.76 xGF% (21st in the league) and got a 0.628 winning percentage (8th in the league) and a 52.73 xGF% (5th in the league) out of them but yeah I guess that's the same.

A .552 in 2020, and another bounce out in the "first round".

I hope you were expecting more.

I'm not going to fault Keefe for Andersen being one of the worst starting goalies in 2020. He had the team playing well, crappy goaltending tanked them. If Andersen was even average in 2020 the conversation around the teams finish is completely different.
