That was such a weird draft year.

To be fair, shockingly Galchenyuk has the second most points from that draft (only 28 more than Rielly), and the most games played (by 10 games over Rielly). But he's no real jewel, despite being in a draft that had no future superstars, unlike almost any other draft year.

With all games and the first two rounds of the playoffs contained to your own division, this seems like it would have been the perfect year to balance the point totals for games.

A regulation win is worth 2 points but a game going to OT is worth 3 points.  This would have been a great opportunity to balance that out

3 points for a regulation win
2 points for an OT/Shootout win
1 point for an OT/SO loss

Make every game a 3 point game.

It's fair to sorta miss them when you're sorting by GP or points, but the draft did produce two Vezina winning franchise goalies in Vasilevskiy and Hellebuyck. But yeah in terms of just skaters it's gotta be up there in terms of weaker drafts.

More importantly

recognizing that Marner's shot is bad, but his booty is big (#MarkHunterWasRight)

(pretty sure this is going to be behind-the-net shenanigans)

I think I almost would prefer to put Simmonds in that spot and have Marner take Rielly's QB position for 5-on-3's.

Crap, I missed both! I hang my head in shame...

Also, Freddie - who, per Hockey-Reference, has the highest point share of anyone taken in 2012, though, that's partly because he's started 100 more games than Vasilevskiy or Hellebuyck.

The closest comparable to 2012 is probably 1996 - which had Chara, but not much else in terms of superstars. A lot of good players, but no one else who would be considered among the best at their position in their time.

I often wonder if there are reasons for bad draft classes or if it's just random chance. Like, I remember someone floating the idea that the generally mediocre drafts for Canadian players between '94 and 2000 might have to do with the Blue Jays coming to Canada and more kids playing Baseball instead of hockey but that feels flimsy.
