Not making any move to help the team for this year's run is a passive-aggressive way of telling them that they haven't played well enough to warrant spending assets to bolster their chances. Not trading Barrie also puts the onus back on the players to salvage their own season without giving them any sort of excuse about management pulling the rug out from under their feet by trading away their best RD.

Sort of weirdly the one reason I could come up with to trade Barrie is to give the players the "You're not good enough" kick in the pants but that strikes me as a very difficult move for Shanahan to sell to the board.

That's interesting. Really thought Carolina would have been the perfect fit. Gotta see what the cost is of course.

Yeah unless that's a top prospect or something, which I doubt, that really seems like something Carolina should have been adamant about beating.

Especially since they have a second 1st round pick to work with.

It's entirely possible they just ran out of time to make the details work, but the idea of Lou nixing this trade just because it leaked (which is something people have often said Lou would do) is hilarious.

Yeah. I imagine it's just too complicated a move to get done. They're apparently been working on it since the summer, so . . .

Feels like it's a cap thing. They probably had to choose between a defenseman like Skjei or Vatanen and a goalie and their goalie injuries may be less serious.

And, now we know why they didn't use it.

Also they have proven that they can put just about anybody in net and win a game.
