2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Have to figure Galchenyuk was offered a million or so at most by Dubas if a new contract was offered at all. I don't blame him for looking elsewhere but I also wouldn't want to pay him more than that.

Yeah. Also, wouldn't be shocked if he ends up signing here any way. He should absolutely see what other offers he might get, but, he also shouldn't wait too long if his plan is to circle back to the Leafs if nothing better comes along (and, by better, I obviously mean more lucrative).

I think he didn't spend enough time actually rehabbing his reputation. I know this is kind of irrational but he's one of the guys who's dropped farthest and needed a major bone just to stay in the league and played a third of a season. He should kiss the ground the Leafs walk on and sign again to prove it's not an aberration. He'd be out of the league more or less without us.

But I guess that's up to other GMs...

That's the thing.  Another GM might give him a better opportunity.  I think this is still likely his best avenue to building off his career (best chance to play in a top 6 with higher end top 6 players) but who knows.  NHL GMs confuse me.

Galchenyuk seems like a solid plan B/C option for the Leafs right now. I think if they are offering him a contract at this point they've been honest in their offseason plans to add a number of forwards that he might be starting the season behind on the depth chart. If they add Bunting, a middle-6 winger (Tatar), and a 3C (Bonino) the forward group is pretty much full barring a Kerfoot or Mikheyev trade. So Galchenyuk would be starting at 13th or 14th forward and would need to be on the Marlies because of a lack of cap space. With that information in mind I don't blame him for at least checking what his other options are.

Happy Michael Bunting Day everyone.

This was a fun watch
and it comes with a companion book

Anyway, he's of the mold of plug-and-play winger Dubas has favoured peppering the lineup with on the cheap, but this one has a bit more pop in the shot and digs in for 2nd, 3rd, 4th efforts (see Matthew Knies, most recently).

Probably one of those batched announcements after one of their bigger fish are confirmed on the line.

Ryan or Bozak would be decent options at 3C. Still bummed about Bonino.

Thus far:

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Robertson-Tavares-Nylander
Kerfoot-Kampf-Mikheyev
Spezza-Engvall-Simmonds
Brooks

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Sandin-Dermott
Liljegren

Campbell
Mrazek

1.445M under the cap

That's a really questionable left side though.

Sign Tatar at $2.5mil and you've got:

Tatar-Matthews-Marner
Kerfoot-Tavares-Nylander
Engvall-Kampf-Mikheyev
Bunting-Spezza-Simmonds

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Sandin-Dermott
Liljegren

Campbell
Mrazek

I mean, that's not bad. Compared to last season you once again have a 3rd/checking line that can probably do it's job but produce zero offence. You've replaced Thornton and Vesey in the top-6 at the start of the season with Tatar and Kerfoot which is a pretty big upgrade. Defence stays mostly the same. In the net Campbell probably won't be as good as he was last season but Mrazek should be much better than Andersen was last season so that evens out.

Add in a properly functioning powerplay and I think the talk about this team definitely 100% being worse than last year is a little overblown.

Maybe I'm down on the team but I really think this isn't a good lineup.
