2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

I know it's quite en vogue around here to be crapping on the management team lately, but all this talk about this huge talented (expensive?) scouting team hired to unearth the hidden gems around the globe and turn them into great returns on investments on the roster really hasn't done a damn thing.

Like, even Mikheyev is very replaceable on the UFA market at the same buck.

I think this is a very fair assessment and criticism.

The Nic Petan era sadly comes to an end.
Petan asked for a trade last season from what I read. He was a tweener. Almost too good for the A but just not good enough for the show with the Leafs.

Ho-Sang is a very intriguing value bet. Worst case scenario on a cheap, two-way contract? He only suits up for the Marlies. Worth the gamble, if it happens.

I expect we'll see a number of signings like this (i.e. young primarily Marlies depth unless they absolutely crush it there). Agostino is gone. Petan is gone. Malgin was qualified but who knows might just stay in Europe. The team isn't exactly bursting at the seams with forwards prospects who are at the AHL level yet so there's a number of spots to fill there (they currently even only have like half a dozen forwards signed to NHL deals that seem Marlies bound).

Michael Dal Colle, another guy the Islanders didn't qualify, could be an option too.

Agree. If he puts in the effort to address weak parts of his game (like Galchenyuk) this could be quite a good acquisition. If not, he spends a season with the Marlies. Remember seeing him play for the Islanders a few years ago and thinking he had tremendous talent and potential. Maybe the Leafs can tap some of that.

He'd definitely be a guy I'd be trying to ink to a cheap, short-term two-way deal as well. Another potential low-risk, high-reward type.

I wouldn't want him anywhere near the NHL team, but the Goat also wasn't qualified if the Marlies needed a bottom-6 centre.

I'm not sure I want this to happen:

If the 21/22 season begins and Joshua Ho-Sang was the teams biggest offseason acquisition I promise I will personally start up People Against Dubas... but I think a lot of people need to remember it's not even July 1st yet on the NHL's typical offseason calendar.

I agree with that.  He has time to make some moves, and I think he will do something in free agency.  I just don't want Martin Jones, because I don't think he will ever get back to being the goalie that helped the Sharks get to the finals.

I'm really not sure what people expected the team to do. Short of trading one of the big 4, which doesn't make a lot of sense right now, it's a capped out team without much in the way of bad contracts.

It says one of several goalies. They have to check in with any and all. I don't see them going after Jones as a 40 game guy. Maybe they sign him as a 3rd guy?

Hey, one of these scrap-heap acquisitions has to turn into a 35 goal scorer for the Leafs at some point no?  Maybe Ho-Sang is the chosen one!

I think there are going to be some quality players needing a contract after the initial crazy period tomorrow at noon.

Have we ever had that kind of player who exceeded expectations like that unexpectedly.  Maybe you can argue that for Hyman although he was more of a step-wise progression.  Who have we had that has gone from questionable to great player all in the span of a season?
