The skating is not quite NHL level yet, but improving

William Villenueve showing a case in point about why defensemen shouldn?t be evaluated solely on points produced.

I have never seen that done before. Ever. Even in Novice hockey.

Just poorly defended, all around. Yikes. Good thing it's only a rookie tournament.

Robertson took exception to a high hit he received prior to this, and proceeded to give at least 3 opposing players the whatfor. Maybe not the best time to do it, but you don't always get to chose when to go Super Saiyan.

That dip by Duszak wasn't much but the CBJ player certainly did bite

I don't personally think Duszak will amount to much in NHL play (his defense is very much a work in progress). But this does illustrate what the dev team is working on with their players. And we know from previous conversations with former Keefe associates that attacking space is a critical concept and mentality with how he wants his staff and teams to read play.

Here's Nick Robertson once again left alone in the slot because he read the flow of play and made himself available (Peterborough chemistry with Gogolev and Der-Arguchintsev line). The Leafs would do well to try to put Robertson into a David Pastrnakian position in 2022: Robertson - Tavares - Marner.

I don't have high expectations for Nick Ritchie and he's probably one of the prime free agent forward picks that I'm lowest on (Bunting, Kampf, Kase, Ritchie); at the same time, he's the one least likely to be useless if offense fizzles out. He'll be a fun case study of whether our dev team and coaching system can effectively program a player to anchor his line with stable predictability* while the more skilled and creative linemates leverage the space he creates for opportunity.

* drift in late through the slot and then crash the far post with his stick on the ice

Is there another 5 hole I'm unaware of?

What should we call a bank shot off the cup?

A one-timer from the slot flat along the ice is highly unexpected in the butterfly era; doubly effective as it's where the goalie's pad has to travel the farthest to cover it if the stick is in motion.

I would call the bank shot off the cup a bank shot off the cup. I think that's a great name.
In the video shared of his goal, I would say that he fanned on the shot more than purposely went "low" five Hole....Which, was my main point to start with. A goal five hole is always a low shot. Especially in the butterfly era where the goalie is collapsing and forcing the hole towards the ice.

It's a great shot when a goalie is in motion, like you say. Unset feet leads to the inability to close the hole without losing balance.

It's fun to try to think of new ways to spread the offense through the top 3 lines by putting one of the top 4 on each of them ...

Robertson - Matthews - Kase
Bunting - Tavares - Marner
Nylander - Kerfoot - Spezza
Ritchie - Kampf - Mikheyev

This is what I do midday when I'm bored.  :-)  Hockey now please.

Before you go down thread (or in the article), I bet you couldn't guess which two Maple Leafs are featured as examples.
