What a turn of events, thought the Leafs would be facing McDavid without Matthews, but no, it seems Matthews will be facing the Oilers without McDavid.

Wait. Matthews isn?t positive now ?
He had two false positive Antigen tests, happens all the time. PCR tests are much more reliable and that is what gave him the negative reading.  They have done a follow up PCR test and results will be available before the game, if it comes back negative then he will be fully cleared to play.
I think McD is out for tomorrow though.

The Islanders and Leafs have traded home dates.

January 22nd is an away game now and April 17th will be a home game.

I might have missed this and this was discussed elsewhere. But 2 leafs games this week are postponed not because of covid but because there?s no attendance?

And tomorrow is still on because Rogers requested the national games go ahead so they have some programming.

Let everyone recover from Covid then break them with 4 games a week for weeks on end

Curious when the "cap crunch" finally hits because (per Capfriendly at least) it seems like Sandin is still technically up with the Leafs as a $0 cap hit roster emergency call-up but with Muzzin and Liljegren back healthy that should need to be converted to a regular call-up soon.

It's of course somewhat easily solved by sending Liljegren to the Marlies, but not sure they go that route.

Trade/waive/release Ritchie, please.
I think he'll be going on waivers if everyone is healthy.

Unless I?m reading this wrong, if you waive a player and demote him you only save a portion of his salary off the cap, I think it works out to just over a million or something like that.

Yes (Capfriendly: CBA FAQ)
Max buriable amount is a function of league minimum salary
2021-22: $750,000 + $375,000 = $1,125,000

I really don't get the two year deal for Ritchie.  Bunting and Kampf I understand.  They both come at low enough cap hits that if they failed (really have both been fantastic) its easy enough to unload them through demotion or insignificant trades.

Ritchie was coming off a 22G/38P pace season but Boston walked away from him.  He's slow as hell and while he does throw some decent hits from time to time doesn't use his size nearly as much as he should.  I don't get why Dubas had to go two years for him.

He was playing pretty well before the holidays though, right?  20 goal guy for $2.5m wasn't unreasonable.

Last season was the first time in his career he scored at a 20 goal pace. He has zero actual 20 goal seasons. He's more of an inconsistent 10-15 goal guy (typically much closer to 10), which, you know, is not great value for $2.5M.
