2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Back to Montreal? Or does he get a 4th jersey this season? Is there a mystery team?

Probably just trying to sneak him down after everyone ahead of them already passed on him just the day before and everyone is pretty capped out. Vegas is a threat to claim, but they might rather have the SPC flexibility (48/50 at the moment).

Ya, like it only made sense to me if they were going to make another move...I guess the move is to re-waive him a day later.

I wonder if Vegas would technically need to have the available cap space to first put him on their roster before assigning him to the AHL. I'd imagine yes, so that might be tricky on their part. But between that possible wrinkle, Vegas' SPC limit, and the fact that even prior to his injury they didn't really play him very much I would guess he's a pretty safe bet to clear.

I can never remember the rules on this.  Can the Leafs immediately recall Liljegren now that they placed Brooks on waivers or do they have to wait until tomorrow for it to take effect.

They have to wait until after the waivers process plays out. Brooks is still on the Leafs' roster while he's on waivers.

Do we need to take away Dubas' ability to make trades?  I'm really not sure that he's very good at that aspect of being a GM.

Someone in there is super horny for the players that have shut us down in previous playoffs; but they only did so because the whistles are non-existent after the first 10 minutes of the game, and were playing the Leafs.

Looks like Chariot shoots left. Does he play right?  Is he better than the guys we have?

To me, it looks like Damon Severson (or Chychrun) could be a fit but almost everyone else who gets mentioned just doesn?t move the needle at all.

I?d rather Claude Giroux at 50% retention. Ritchie and Kerfoot back (plus picks and prospects) and the salaries basically match.  Much bigger difference maker.

Giroux - Tavares - Nylander

lol. Amirov + a 1st round pick.

Yeah I'm not gonna lie after CJ's big "Leafs are after a mystery player, mystery player, MYSTERY player, MYSTERY PLAYER" thing last year I'm not going to get too worked up over his reporting on things like this.

Agreed. He's good for day to day news, but he's not a great insider.

Obviously there could have been something that the Leafs were looking at but yeah, that clickbait stuff....it's Eklund levels of irrelevant.  I do like his podcast though.

This also reminds me of my long-held belief that the validity of trade rumours can often be determined by how/where an insider announces it. Longer explanation here, but it basically boils down to TV segment -> tweet -> radio -> podcast, with rumours announced on podcasts generally being the least reliable (gotta fill an hour of content somehow).

CJ hasn't bothered tweeting out this information. He also had an opportunity to talk about Chiarot on Insider Trading last night but didn't bring it up at all (LeBrun did however link the Leafs to Justin Braun there, a name I brought up a couple of months ago). And when Chiarot was a big discussion on IT a few days ago he never brought up the Leafs' interest. If it was a legitimate rumour (oxymoron I know), he would have said it on air.

Dom at The Athletic lays out a pretty good argument why teams with analytically inclined front offices are less likely to be interested in Chiarot (media created rumours be damned).

6. Just before the Toffoli trade was officially announced, rumours swirled about Calgary?s interest in Ben Chiarot as well, a heavy and rugged defender expected to command at least a first-round pick at the deadline. While it?s possible Chiarot does better outside of Montreal, it?s hard to fathom considering he?s been a massive part of the problem this season. Without Shea Weber?s help, Chiarot?s game has crumbled with a putrid 41.6 percent expected goals rate and an even uglier 31.6 percent of the actual goals. On a terrible team, both are somehow below the team average. For teams hoping for his ?defensive? prowess, no Canadiens defender gives up more chances against than Chiarot?s 3.08 expected goals against per 60.

On top of that Chiarot is a major risk at putting his team on the penalty kill due to his lack of foot speed and this season has a penalty differential of minus-14. On a per-60 basis, only three defenders have a worse rate over the last three seasons than Chiarot.

He?s not the answer, and in all likelihood will likely be a landmine other teams should try to avoid at all costs at the deadline ? not spent assets for. Chiarot is currently projected to be an incredible detriment to any team that acquires him, worth minus-0.9 wins. That?s the fifth-lowest mark in the league and is driven by already being worth minus-1.2 wins this season in just 44 games. Only Keith Yandle has been worse.

There have been comparisons made to Tampa Bay?s acquisition of David Savard last season as the blueprint for a Chiarot deal. Aside from that also being a wild overpayment, Savard at least had a stronger resume to fall back on despite also having a rough season prior. That kept his projected value afloat. Chiarot?s resume looks buoyed by one solid year in 2019-20 where he was stapled to a star defender. That?s not worth paying premium assets for.
