With Washington and New Jersey both losing their big ticket UFA goalies to sudden retirement, the chance to lose Aaron Dell to waivers has gone up significantly.

Lehtonen looked like advertised to me, for his first game on small ice, very competent, still think he scored on the Nylander goal and added an assist as well. I like Boyd as well. Brazeau if he can improve his skating could be a find. Starting to wonder if a Cambell/Dell combo could work. Freddie didn't look great. Perhaps we could glean a high draft pick for Fredo, he just doesn't seem to be the one we need.Guilt Trip said:Lehtonen looked good to me. Positioning was good, made some nice passes, grabbed a couple of apples. Barabanov looked good in his limited role also. Vesey didn't do anything for me. Didn't really notice him. Simmonds got a few chances on the PP. Brazeau is f'n huge. He's still very raw and hopefully a year on the Marlies helps him progress. Robertson can rip it as he did on his goal. He's taxi squad bound for now. Fun to watch though.azzurri63 said:Happy New Year everyone. Hope everyone is safe, healthy and getting through these crappy times. Forgot the game was televised only caught the last 8 minutes. Like some thoughts and mostly curious how Lehtonen looked.

Marner and Matthews on fire, not sure Jumbo is a fit as yet. Good work by Engvall as well, scored a beauty. Looks like wants a job. Simmons was seen, Barbanov looks like a keeper. Invisible to me were Vesey, Joey Anderson.
Looks like Lilejegren has improved and looked good defensively, also noticeable were Kivihalme, Dermott, Sandin, Hollowell. The goat this season I predict will be Brodie. Made a couple of bonehead plays and giveaways. Hope he is better than advertised.

Agree. Lehtonen is ahead of Dermott right now so it appears Dermott will be the 21st guy. He def won't clear waivers Of course the Leafs could surprise and put Vesey and/or Boyd on waivers as well. That will depend on how good they think either will contribute. If both cleared it would give them cap flexibility as they could send both down on days off. I guess we'll find out today or tomorrow.CarltonTheBear said:OldTimeHockey said:Ok, so if I'm reading correctly, the only way they don't have to waive Dell is if they keep 3 goalies as part of their 23 player roster.
Yeah. And since the Leafs cap space means they can only carry a maximum roster of 21 players to start the season it's very unlikely they use that last spot to stash Dell at the expense of someone like Lehtonen.
Rosters are due tomorrow so we'll see what happens in the next day, it's out of Dubas' hands at this point. I wasn't too concerned about Washington grabbing him since they have guys like Copley and Vanecek who they seem comfortable with in a back-up role. Plus I'm guessing they still sign Craig Anderson, even if it's just for the taxi squad.
New Jersey though is more of a worry, they're definitely going to be grabbing someone on the waiver wire. I wonder if they'll prefer Louis Domingue though since he spent some time in their organization last year (granted his numbers weren't great). He was placed on waivers yesterday.

Most of the expected Marlies are headed to waivers for AHL or being loaned outright (see details link)
Notable cuts: Joey Anderson, Timothy Liljegren, Pierre Engvall
For Frank: Marincin is also cut
NJ could be a location for Fredo, but I was thinking Chicago or Hurricanes.Zee said:Highlander said:Lehtonen looked like advertised to me, for his first game on small ice, very competent, still think he scored on the Nylander goal and added an assist as well. You're saying trade Freddie to NJ? Roll the bones! What have I got to lose, I've only been hoping to see a Cup for 44 years or so. Maybe a Campbell/Dell combo is the secret sauce we never knew we needed.
Of course this is all based on one game that wasn't even a game with their own teammates. 3 days!
Highlander said:Surprised at Engvall, however I didn't see the first period, but I thought he was strong and scored a beauty. Not sure whats up between Keefe and him.
