2022 NHL Draft Discussion

Having 40 people on stage for each draft pick might be a start

100% they need to do it like the NBA draft. 90% of the best things about the draft these days is just Bettman openly taunting the fans. Let him have the stage.

The we have a trade to announce.  I forgot how much I missed that.  Only caught the last bit of the draft but did see it for the Leafs trade.  Stop making the picks about the teams and make them about the players.  It would be a good way to start shifting the NHL marketing to try and generate interest around new players

We have no goalies now, cool

But now, they might be able afford an upgrade.

They have to. If they dont come out with a legit starter this has to be the end of the Dubas era.

Ritchie and Mrazek having to be traded away off last season is still an issue for me.  Dubas has mismanaged draft pick assets and it?s part of why we have no prospects to fill in gaps in the roster

I basically agree with downtrading to get out from Mrazek but yeah, bottom line is it cost Dubas a 1st to get rid of a bad mistake.  So yeah gunnar36.

But, respectfully, that?s not really a fair assessment.  This is not like the Marleau deal where the first is out the door.  As others mentioned, a close second is coming back.  It?s fair to feel disappointed, but it?s not fair to describe this as costing a first.

First of all, I'm not disappointed.  I posted earlier that this draft, for sure, is a time to trade down.  But it objectively did cost them a first and objectively was done to fix a GM's mistake.
Mzazek was only a real mistake in hindsight. He just didn't work out. Dubas needed an experienced 1-B in case Campbell faltered.  He needed to bring in someone with long term NHL experience or he would have been toasted. If Mzazek had even a decent season we would all be singing different song.

I'm sure its been mentioned elsewhere but Seattle seems to be having a solid draft.

Montreal's had a weird but potentially good draft. Who knows how the call at #1 will work out, and I think I'd have rather taken Nazar at 13 than traded for Dach. But after that Mesar at 26, Beck 33, Hutson 62 all seem very solid.

Nicholas Moldenhauer is the 3rd round pick. Born in Mississauga, plays in the USHL. Listed at RW.

First a CHL Centre, then a Nik? Dubas may just be running the draft to get back into my good graces.

Interesting he played on the same team as fellow draft pick Joe Miller.

Looks like they're back to taking swings. Chicago Steel guy, small, good skater.

He also had a pretty hectic draft year as he missed time with a "mononucleosis-like illness" and then got cut pretty good on his face with a skate blade that caused him to miss a bunch of time.

Like Knies, gotta wonder where he might have gone in this draft if he had played a full healthy season.

Leafs traded a 2023 4th rounder to snag him. Must be something they really like.

And then an overaged Russian who there's no data on at hockeydb. Nikita Grebenkin is the name.

Never change, Dubas. Never change.

Nikita Grebenkin, RW, Magnitogorsk Jr. (Rus)

The Russian winger took his game to new heights this season, showing just how good his stickhandling can be. His defensive game isn?t great, but there?s skill there.

Skill!

I was literally thinking the same thing. Why are we wasting our time on Russian randos? After round 4 I say just hand the keys to Thommie Bergman.

Eh. Past the 4th round and pretty much all you're doing is swinging from the heels. So long as you're not doing it in the 2nd round, I don't think it matters much.

True, but I have a lot of faith in Thommie Bergman in the later rounds vs. what we've seen over the years with the likes of Nikolai Chebykin and Fedor Gordeev. I feel like they're disproportionately hitting on their longshot Swedes than others.

I wouldn't be completely opposed to Murray at 50% retained if there's an additional asset coming our way too. He was at least able to get his save percentage back up right around league average after a pretty horrible start last season.

Agree. He did get it together somewhat. Who's your other 1B? Hill, Stolarz?

Also his high danger save percentage was decent during his time with the Sens.  If I am not mistaken I think it was better than Campbells.  I think that is the one thing that concerns me about Jack Campbell.  His low high danger save percentage.
