I don't have a subscription to the Athletic...but is it a suggestion that the Leafs now need less of adding veteran presence for the core because they themselves are now the vets, and perhaps now the Leafs need an injection of youth that the now vets can start to mentor?
 
Most of them are the Marlies that were sent down prior to the Gravenhurst trip (and already played Marlie preseason games), plus the guys coming off injury and the three or four players vying to make the Leafs.

Hutch by all accounts was a much loved player and very good for the Marlies. Wouldn't be a surprise if they signed him to an AHL contract and wouldn't be opposed to him helping the kids out.

Not a slam dunk enough for me to blow up the cap situation to accommodate. Minten looked good and great even when Knies* was on his wing, but there is more to develop. If they can do a 9 game spell, maybe?

* Knies is not proven in an 82 game grind (though I think he will battle through it). He needs to learn to pace himself a bit.
 
I have no problem demoting Minten.  I think he looked good but use that to have a great junior season.  Hopefully go to the World Juniors and then get some AHL playoff experience at the end of the year (hopefully).  We already might be losing someone off the roster due to cap circumstance.  Better to minimize the risks.

Agreed. Another year in junior isn?t going to hurt at all.
 
I find it a surprising that a kid like Minten can come to camp as more of a courtesy to pretend to compete for a job at C, and then win it.

There are guys that have been here for years that can't seem to separate themselves, and this 19 year old comes in and takes the job. 

He may not get the job because cap and development...but he definitely won the job on merit.
