2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

I think Robertson is worth another shot after sitting some games. At least give him a chance to produce a little to enhance his status for other teams. Once everyone is healthy (if that ever happens) he's not going to be playing much if at all.

Nylander...just waiting to see his name on the waiver wire.

Early next month (about 3 weeks from now), if there are no further injuries, they'll face a cap issue when Jarnkrok's $2.1M cap hit returns. A lot could happen between now and then so I doubt they're very worried about it.
Even then it wouldn't be a "cap" issue though, any 23 man roster would fit under the cap ceiling. Hypothetically speaking when (if?) Jarnkrok returns and everyone is healthy at that point this would be the Leafs roster options:

Knies-Matthews-Nylander
McMann-Tavares-Marner
Pacioretty-Domi-Robertson
Dewar-Kampf-Jarnkrok
Lorentz-Holmberg-Reaves
Minten

Rielly-Hakanpaa
McCabe-Tanev
OEL-Timmins
Benoit-Myers

Woll
Stolarz

That's a 26-man roster that's only $1.4mil over the cap. So they'd be in a position where they have to cut 3 players to be at the maximum roster size but would only need to remove 2 league minimum salaries to get under the cap ceiling.

Cap issues can still come up if they end up having a bunch of non-LTIR eligible injuries all at once (like they sort of are now) but that would just result in the team needing to play with a 20 or 21 or 22 man roster as opposed to needing to make a trade to clear cap space.

I still think, with PP and top 6 ice time, under a different system, he could score 20 goals for a team in a season.
But he's on pace for scoring about 6 goals here.
It's a putting-lipstick-on-a-pig problem now.
It's sports. Anything can happen. But it is not looking good.
He's been benched. Healthy scratch after a fairly decent opportunity with all the injuries to others.

They've probably fished to see what return they could get.
They apparently did so last summer and it wasn't attractive.
The return is probably lower now - like 'why bother'?
Sad situation for him. They're not going to ride him into the playoffs.

IR
McMann
McCabe
Hakanpaa

LTIR
Jarnkrok

By my calculation, that is a 23 man roster with 3 on IR and 1 on LTIR that is $100,000 over the cap.
They could be looking at that when Kampf returns (Dec 14th according to Puckpedia if McMann, McCabe & Hakanpaa remain on IR

It's time to move on from Robertson. Get what you can for him. He had his chance coming out of training camp and, frankly, flopped. He is never going to thrive under Berube's style anyway.

I just keep on thinking that he's not really a liability out there, and there's no one trying to punch through the ceiling with the Marlies right now, his value is probably garbage right now, so let's just keep him and waive the kids that don't need waivers. He could still be something, and it's not like Grebbo (I liked your name reference to Grabbo) and Nylander jr. are beating the hell of out him for that roster spot. You could make an argument for Minten, but he's waivers exempt and I think I'd like to give him some more baking time with the Marlies to see if he can get better.

I get it if they're forced to make a move and lose him for nothing through waivers, but at this point I think they'd be selling really low.

Also was impressed with Cédric Paré in pre season. Had the overtime shootout winner on the weekend. I think he is a C, I would keep my eye on him as he seems to play with some passion.

Disagree. I don't think he's gotten the same chance that McMann and Holmbeg got. He's never been given a shot in the top 6 or on PP1, even when it was struggling badly.
He really doesn't hurt you defensively and he costs very little with little trade value.

Glad the Nylander's got to play together in the NHL. This was the obvious outcome though given Alex's play. Should still be a solid AHL asset.

Mermis will add to an already pretty crowded blue line down there. Don't think it's super likely but wonder if the Wild might consider a claim on him. They have Jon Merrill as their 6/7D right now and he isn't playing very well it seems. Mermis outplayed him there a tad last season too. Wouldn't be the end of the world to have that contract spot open up and also leave more playing time to some of the younger Marlies, especially after having to take on Matt Benning.

They definitely will have roster room to add McMann who is supposedly close.
If they want to add McCabe off the IR, they can send down Rifai.

So the next roster decision would likely be for Hakanpaa (IR) or Kampf (LTIR) if there are no other injuries or trades

Minten looks like he's going to stick for now.

No so sure about that. Unless I'm missing something, they're at 23 on the roster without McCabe (on IR)
McCabe probably comes off IR later today once Nylander clears waivers and is reassigned (or claimed of course but that's unlikely).

I miscounted. I had McMann who is still on IR within the 23 in my spreadsheet as he was due to return (though he missed last practice).
Nylander was not within the 23 as he's been waived and won't be on the roster as of noon or so today.
So they can add McCabe.
Why call up Grebenkin now? Has me wondering if something else might be going on.
