2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

I miscounted. I had McMann who is still on IR within the 23 in my spreadsheet as he was due to return (though he missed last practice).
Nylander was not within the 23 as he's been waived and won't be on the roster as of noon or so today.
So they can add McCabe.
Why call up Grebenkin now? Has me wondering if something else might be going on.
My main takeaway is that you're keeping your own roster spreadsheet, which is nerdiness I can get behind

I have for years. How else can one figure some of this stuff out?
Problem is accuracy when you're modeling the potential lineup changes (even though I have a few spreadsheets) and forget to put things back (like I did with McMann today).

Kampf is skating along with McMann. They're going to have to make some decisions for those two soon.
They can send Grebenkin down to make room for McMann. That is easy.
But with Kampf's return, I have a feeling Minten isn't going anywhere soon so something else may happen.

Puckpedia has the Leafs roster updated daily. And with their PuckGM feature you can do your own edits to move guys on and off IR/LTIR to see what things look like once those moves happen. Probably a lot easier than using a spreadsheet.

I refer to Puckpedia for a bunch of the data
But I find the spreadsheet easier. No rules. No constraints.
For example, I wanted to move Mermis on Puckpedia off the roster but can't do what I wanted because he's on LTIR. I don't have that problem in a spreadsheet.
Cut and paste players in and out and it does all the cap/roster math.
I have many tabs. For prior and multiple years out, (Marlies & Leafs are in the same tab), ECHL, Prospects, UFAs, magic number, some stats, franchise stats, etc.
And links to reference info. Works in the drawer sort of thing.

For whatever it's worth you would just need to take him off LTIR first. Either by clicking the 3 dots by his name and selecting "Move from LTIR" or manually sliding his name from the LTIR section to either regular IR or onto the regular roster. Then you can move him off the roster.

It is illness season. Someone is a possible game time decision, I imagine.

Might even just be a "get Grebenkin some more NHL pay" thing.
Might be. They NHL coaches might be working with him to accelerate his development. He has the physical tools already.

Ditto for Rifai - a reward for good play and to help him get some time with the NHL team to help him make the transition if needed in the future.

Ah, Utah grabbed him before Minny could. Again not a big loss. Leafs open up a contract spot that Nylander took. Leafs D should be fine depth wise with any of Myers, Rifai, Benning, or Kokkonen likely being able to step in when injuries hit.

Also kind of just a funny turn of events for Mermis. If he doesn't get injured (and from the sounds of it it was pretty gnarly injury) he almost certainly clears waivers at the start of the season and maybe never really gets into NHL games. Now he puts that injury past him and gets a NHL shot.

The Leafs have too many defensemen with the Marlies right now anyway.

Webber-Benning
Rifai-Mattinen
Kokkonen-Niemela
Pietroniro-Villeneuve
Mermis-Miller

Yep.
OTH, Alex puts up some ok numbers for the Marlies. Gets a NHL contract (so there is a decent blessing for him there). He gets recalled to play with his brother. .... 5 NHL games later, NHL GMs are unanimous in not wanting him (for about the 5th time in his career).

Potentially a big weekend for Minten to show what he's got between two actual top-9 NHLers finally. Barring any other injuries (*knock on wood*) once Kampf returns Minten either gets sent back to the AHL or if he sticks at 3C longer the Leafs would need to make a tough call on someone like Robertson, Reaves, or Myers.
