2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

If you had to pay both $14m, do you take Marner or Rantanen?

I see your narrow equivalency and raise you the spectre of another 4th overall pick and Darren Ferris client, Sam Bennett.
Say 9M x 7 for him + another 5M for a winger or defenseman of consequence (or trade for Jordan Kyrou or Kirill Marchenko with futures) would be better value (to me) over 14M+ for wants to play here forever but needs to be paid Matthews-style Marner.

Sam Bennett, the career 49, 40, 40, 41, and 50 (point pace over full season) points at 9 million? I know he does lots of other things that are going to make him expensive but, yeah, I think Marner at 14 is still better. You aren't getting another 50 points of offense out of a 5M winger.

Seriously. If (when?) a team signs Bennett for anywhere near that much, it will instantly be a bad contract, even with the increasing cap. As much as the Leafs could use a lot of what he bring to the table, his value is much closer to $5-6M than $9M.

In both games this past weekend, William Nylander had empty-net looks where he could have shot. He’s second in the league in goals, and a 50-goal season is within reach, but on both plays, he passed it to Holmberg instead. Last season, he finished with 98 points and didn’t make a huge push or cheat to hit 100 points in the final few weeks. I appreciate that Nylander doesn’t sell out on these types of “achievements,” and if those goals go to Holmberg’s confidence in any way, it’s worth far more to the Leafs as a team overall than any individual milestone for an already extremely confident and productive Nylander.

They were empty netters but they weren’t super easy tap ins either as Holmberg fought through backchecking duress and tight angles to pot those insurance markers.

I’m more than happy to work the number lower than 9M, but I think Sam Bennett’s numbers undersell what he can do in the right environment with complementary wingers.

His Calgary numbers are comically bad, but he was constantly miscast and never played with stars until injuries hit.

I would hope that we don't overpay a player like Bennett who could be benefiting to the situation as much as the situation is benefitting from his "style of play". His Calgary numbers may be poor, but his current numbers with Florida are also nothing to get overly excited about

I'd pretty much pay Marner whatever he wants. Well, within reason.

I enjoy watching Marner, he's an unbelievably skillful player and watching the likes of him and Matthews (and Nylander) who will likely end up as some of the top 1-10 leafs points/goals getters of all times playing on the same roster is great.

Unless the number comes in quite significantly lower, I'm quite happy to let another team overpay him for his "intangibles" and middle 6 production.

I'm onboard with this thought in theory...I watch the Leafs to be entertained, and Marner's creativity is very entertaining, and so I'd like to continue to watch Mitch Marner in a Leafs jersey.

However, I'd also like to see this team do some damage in the playoffs, which is also very entertaining...so I think that the results this spring will inform management as to whether or not they can continue with this very top-heavy lineup construction.

This screams Clarkson 2.0.
Yeah, maybe. I don't think it would quite the same level of disaster, but it definitely won't be anywhere near good value at that rate and term.

For what it's worth, the projections I've seen for Bennett put him more along the lines of $6.5M per, which feels about right if he can still produce at a 45-50 point clip.

Yes, the playoff point is fair.

My kind of counter is the regular season is a guaranteed 82 games of watching Marner. The playoffs is no guarantee of any games (though if that did happen with the current roster I think there’d be serious problems to address elsewhere).

So from an “entertainment” point of view, playoffs is kind of “bonus” entertainment.

Nothing is more entertaining than winning, though. So there is that.

As for the top heavy construction, I actually think the Tavares situation is bigger there. I would be prepared to lose him before Marner and use that cap hit to add a few options. Though again I’d rather keep him but at a more sensible number or preferably discount.

Marner's agent after free agency: "The free agency market has determined Mitch's value. These teams(whoever) have offered Mitch $14 (or whatever) mil/yr. Mitch offers $1 mil/yr home team discount. What do you want to do?"

Is it only the leafs who can offer him 8 year max instead of 7, and if so do they have to make that offer before a certain date?

He's only eligible for the 8th year if he signs before the UFA market opens - so June 30th or earlier.
