2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

He me too! Only Leaf playoff game I've ever been to. I had my Bill Berg jersey on and my wife had my Perreault jersey. Perreault scored the game winner and Berg had the primary assist. Wrong Berg though.

An Aki Berg reference??? 😮

And did you take your wife to the strip club as well? :D
That is one detail that is not murky. I've never taken my wife to a strip club.
We used to do some gigs in them and those were so lewd, female companionship was not a good idea.
Not shining moments but witnessing the decadence was an experience.

There is probably an exception but I can't recall a playoff where it got progressively easier.
To this day I still don’t understand how Carolina beat Toronto. They were absolutely an inferior team and Detroit walked all over them in the finals. The whole team decided to just stop scoring.

Toronto 7-2-1; Tampa 5-3-2 and Florida 4-5-1 in their last 10.
Ottawa 6-3-1 and Montreal 6-3-1 (W6) added as they could be 1st round opponents

Home Games: Leafs (2), Panthers (3), Lightning (3), Senators (4), Canadiens (2)
Road Games: Leafs (2), Panthers (1), Lightning (1), Senators (0), Canadiens (2)
Back to Backs: Leafs (2), Panthers (2), Lightning (0), Senators (0), Canadiens (1)
3 Game in 4: Leafs (1), Panthers (2), Lightning (0), Senators (0), Canadiens (1)
Games against team on 0 days rest: Leafs (1), Panthers (0), Lightning (4), Senators (3)
Games against playoff teams: Leafs (4), Panthers (2), Lightning (2), Senators (1)
Games against teams within 3 points of a playoff spot: Leafs (2), Panthers (1), Lightning (1), Senators (1), Canadiens (3)

Tie-breakers:
1) PTs%

Leafs > Lightning (+3) > Panthers (+6) > Senators (+10) > Montreal (+13)

Montreal is eliminated on points. Ottawa is eliminated on points
Tampa's elimination number is 6.
Florida's elimination number is 3 (1 Leafs Regulation win or Florida game that goes to OT makes it 2)

2) RW

Toronto (39) = Tampa (39) > Florida (36) > Ottawa (33) > Montreal (29)

The Leafs need 1 regulation win or a Panthers game to go to OT to control this tiebreaker (Leafs already hold the 3rd tiebreaker with the Panthers)
The Leafs need a combination of 4 regulation wins or Lightning games to go to OT to move to Tiebreaker 3 with Tampa

3) ROW

Toronto (47) > Tampa (43) > Ottawa (41) > Panthers (40)

The Leafs hold this tiebreaker against the panthers (46 to a max of 44 for the Panthers)
The Leafs need 1 Regulation/OT win or a Tampa game to go to the shootout to win this tiebreaker but currently move to tiebreaker 4 regardless

4) Total Wins

Toronto (48) > Tampa (45) = Florida (45) > Ottawa (42)

The Leafs need 1 win or Tampa loss to move to tiebreaker 5.

5) Head to Head

Toronto is 3-1-0 against Tampa with one game remaining so hold the head to head tie-breaker

Florida is 2-1-0 against Toronto so the best Toronto can do is make this a wash with 2 games remaining
Florida is 2-1-0 against the Lightning so the best Tampa can do is make this a wash with 1 game remaining
Ottawa is 3-0-0 against Toronto so hold this tie-breaker.
Ottawa is 2-2-0 against Tampa so are tied.
Ottawa is 2-1-0 against Florida. With two home games the first Ottawa win is ignored and they are tied 1-1-0.

6) Goal differential

Tampa (73) > Florida (31) > Toronto (28) > Ottawa (4) > (-17)

This doesn't matter for the Leafs as they hold tie-breakers against everyone before this

7) Goals scored

Tampa (279) > Toronto (255) > Florida (241) > Montreal (236) > Ottawa (224)

This doesn't matter for the Leafs as they hold tie-breakers against everyone before this

The worst the Leafs can finish is A3 now and could still play any of Tampa (Home or Road), Florida (Home or Road), Ottawa (Home) or Montreal (Home).

I'm willing to give Laughton the playoffs and the start of next year but he has been dreadful. He had a handful of games where he started to look a little more comfortable and has gone right back to being completely ineffective at doing anything. It continues the long line of the Leafs giving up 1st round picks at the deadline for players who kind of suck.

Laughton - 15GP 1G 1A -5
Carlo - 15GP 0G 2A +4

Connor Timmins - 14GP 1G 6A 7P +4
Connor Dewar - 14GP 4G 2A 6P +/- 0
Fraser Minten - 3GP 1G 0A -3 (10GP 3G 4A -3 in the AHL)
Nikita Grebenkin - 8GP 3G 2A -4 in the AHL

To say the Leafs are better than before the trade deadline would be false.

After 10 games together the Laughton-Domi duo has a 37.99% CF, 28.57% GF (2-5), and 37.11% xGF. Very quickly running out of time to either get a 3rd line with those 2 going or to figure out something else.

And honestly, I feel like Domi has kind of picked up his game. He's been anchored to Laughton and Holmberg who provide absolutely nothing offensively. At least you get sparks of things with Robertson

Zero scoring punch, they aren't even good defensively as a group and were the worst line again last night. Leafs can't and I suspect won't go into the playoffs with them as a trio. Patches is going to play either on L2 or L3 and that moves, I would hope, Domi to the wing and Laughton as 3C. Jarnkrok has done nothing since his return. He's looked ok with Kampf. I don't get why Berube hasn't moved Domi to the wing yet. I actually thought Laughton had a decent game last night. Lead the team in hits.

Update on the chase for 1st place in the Atlantic. Magic numbers for the Leafs to eliminate the teams behind them:

TB - 6
FLA - 3 (2 if FLA needs to go to OT)

This is 100% on Berube's inability to ice three lines that can score. Matthews and Marner get shut down in the playoffs again, and we lose.

Not having depth is not a Berube issue......it's a Rogers and Shanahan issue (of course executed by Dubas).

By 2020 and 2021 playoffs this problem and weakness became very very apparent. Ownership and Owners rep did nothing about it. So nothing changed.
