Some people said toast; some other opinions considered it manageable. Hakanpaa is essentially the player profile we would've tried to acquire at the deadline, so to get a non-zero chance of him playing for just UFA dollars is worth a shot; the knee issue also just meant they got like 2 more spares of him in Philippe Myers (ok) and Nicholas Mattinen (uh, probably not going to work). The defense corp looks a lot better when he is effective on the ice, so the regular season stretch here is a runway to get him going by spring.

Would it have been better to get Matt Roy outright with an overpay? Yeah, probably! but he chose Washington for many years.

I thought Hakanpaa looked ok in his 2 games this season. I mean he didn't exactly look good but he looked more like a guy who hadn't played a game in 8 months and was rusty as opposed to someone trying to play through a career ending knee injury.
 

Dewar had a 17.5% shooting percentage in a 4th line role when he scored 10 goals with Minny last season. For comparisons sake that's a higher shooting percentage than Nylander has ever had in his career and only slightly less than the 18.7% shooting percentage Matthews had in his 69-goal season last year. So he was due to get hit with regression pretty hard regardless. Still zero goals in 20 games this season is tough to see. I've liked the other parts to his game this season but even in a 4th line role he needs to produce a little more offence. Especially since he got a bit more of a raise than I was expecting.
 

Wonder if the Leafs liked him enough to make a claim in the hopes no one else does and they can send him to the Marlies.

Utah only played him in one game against the Ducks.
He was -2, 2 shots on goal, 2 PIM, 10:47 ice time, no hits, 1 blocked shot, no giveaways or takeaways
Not bothering with his advanced stats for 1 game.
I don't know the guy. If the Leafs still like him, why not for depth - as long as they don't mind burning one of their 3 standard contracts available with the trade deadline 2 months away (which would make me hesitate)

Usually, it's pretty easy to open up a contract spot as part of a trade (just think about how many times a random AHL player is included in a trade), if needed, but, yeah, it's definitely something that will be factored into the thinking here.

Semyon Der-Arguchintsev is taking up a roster spot according to Puckpedia
An unsigned RFA shouldn't be too tough to get rid of. He's not blowing people away in the KHL.
I'm not sure why they're keeping his rights

He's not taking up one of the 50 contract slots, though. He's taking up a spot on the list of players the team can hold rights to - which, I believe is capped at 90. The Leafs have plenty room there - per CapWages, they're at 68, if I'm reading everything correctly - so, no urgency there.

That being said, guys like Pare, Abruzzese, and Benning - players who likely don't figure into the NHL roster before their contracts expire - should be relatively easy to tack onto a deal. You could also include longshot prospects like Kressler or Steeves, if need be.

The contract cap potentially becomes an issue if there's someone on waivers that the team really wants to claim - though, with 3 spots currently available, not a pressing issue - but, with trades, it can typically be easily worked out.
