2024 Offseason Thread: Changes

what happened to the other Dakota.  Johnson, where did he end up? Again we had him and let him go. Same as Verhauge, Marchment, and several others.

Dakota Joshua re-signed with the Canucks 4yr x $3.25M

More Marlies. Myers has a decent amount of NHL experience, so he?s probably near the top of the call up list.

Day ruined.

Pain.

At least it?s nice to know Treliving is taking swings on good pitches, even if it misses a bit.

It is interesting that we just assume GMs are dumb and didn't try to address issues and had to fall back on the 2nd or 3rd option.

Myers & DeMelo were out of it re-signing well b4 Jul 1 so I didn't see the Leafs named as a party in on them in the rumours.

But I saw rumours the Leafs were interested in all these RH dmen:
Sean Walker
Brett Pesce
Brandon Montour
Matt Roy
Alexandre Carrier (re-signed with Nashville)

They were not garbage sources saying it and more than one reported it.

There are 32 teams, a shortage of RH dmen and only 5 changed teams. Leafs did well to get one. I knew getting two was going to be tough with limited cap space.

25% of the league signed contracts in a matter of a few hours or a day.
The Leafs got a couple of dmen for sure (+ Hakanp?? pending), they got their 3 goalies signed, they got Domi & Liljegren re-signed for reasonable deals. Within 30-60 minutes of noon most of their cap was gone.
It goes like dominos - they often have to nail one deal before they can commit to the next. They have to have contingencies figured out in advance for when something falls through. All teams are doing the dominos to contingency loop.
That first hour was nuts. Not a lot of time to deliberate.
I'm not Treliving's biggest fan (I don't mind him) but under those crazy circumstances, I think the Leafs planned it out and did pretty well.

Yeah, I don't think they did too badly. I'd have probably tried something else but I guess my thought is it's easy to just whatabout every deal except we really have little inside knowledge about all the different variables that go into making a decision on both GM and agent/player side. Their primary signing targets weren't that far off of what most people thought they needed. I'm left still wondering about the forwards a bit though...

Lots of time until Oct so we'll see what's cooking by then

Dewar re-signing will probably take them over the current cap a little. He's arbitration eligible.

If Hakanpaa is healthy enough to play (still not on their roster), they'll probably flip a dman (Liljegren?). They may be in a little limbo until that is figured out. If he isn't healthy enough, they probably will still do something there.

Some posters have wondered about Jarnkrok or Kampf being moved to open up space. Or some other trade.

Robertson is very likely going to be traded. He's not waivers eligible.

Cowan is an economical scoring forward wild card for September. Does he go back to junior?
Is Minten going to be their waiver exempt taxi squad for forwards?
Maybe Grebyonkin or another player dazzles in preseason forcing a roster change.

At the very least, they have a hole at 2nd/3rd line center they would like to address. I think they prefer Domi on a wing.

They can go 10% over on the cap so they may yet sign a UFA. They picked up Benoit Aug 28th.

Goal & core 4 plus seem to be the only places they're set.

So many things can happen. More than I mentioned. Some have to.
I'm optimistic they can improve the forwards.

Blog TO: Mitch Marner saga reportedly turned some free agents away from Toronto Maple Leafs
On an appearance on Kyper & Bourne from Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, one of the NHL's top insiders suggested that Toronto media and fanbase hysteria around Marner has driven a few potential free agents away from considering the Leafs as a destination.

"It's funny, one player told me that there are some players that have watched from outside, some players that have watched what has gone on with this whole Marner thing over the last month or two and have gone, 'I want no part of that. I don't want anything to do with that.'? I think people know Toronto's [unique], some players were like, 'nope, that's not going to be me.'"

Zero surprise. Issue has been around for decades.

Treliving is learning about this the hard way.

With social media, we've never seen the fan base go after a star player like this. It's crazy how bad it's gotten and I actually find it ridiculous.

There?s this shit posting phenomenon going on now. As though it?s somehow a more genuine take to hate on someone than to be positive.

I?ll just crowbar an example in here which is really apples and oranges, but just something to illustrate the point - so there?s this new Star Wars show the acolyte which is being blasted where ever possible. Well yesterday the latest episode aired, and less than 10 mins into the episode being dropped there were a ton of posts/reviews saying how terrible the episode was. No one in the world could have finished watching the episode yet! - now I think this is more the result of a troll farm, which don?t think is an issue with Marner.

Apologies for the rambling post, but this is my long way of slagging social media. I truly don?t see what the upside of it is, and I truly believe is what is undoing society as we speak.

There is a trend now, usually in relation to `woke` or perceived woke shows, movies, books, etc, that downvote them immediately. Anything that is blatantly anti-right, anti-vax or evokes feminist or LGTBQ+ values automatically gets a 1 star rating or bashed. It`s pretty sad and I absolutely agree that social media (and the implementation and advancement of smartphones in general) has completely derailed the fabric of our society. The lack of both empathy and recourse are dangerous things.

Every team has some media or fan, or both, driven narrative around one of the players when the team isn't successful.

In every sport, in every market.

And there's always some player that just doesn't want the pressure of expectations.

ho hum.  If you don't like the bright lights and the pressure that comes from playing hockey in a deep market, well then maybe you're not the guy the Leafs should sign.  But consider maybe those bright lights and accompanying pressure might make you better than you ever thought you could be!

But never mind, go see if Carolina is looking for your services.

Social media allows the cowards, the cruel and the ignorant to remain anonymous, while reeking havoc with society.  Even the Athletic has become a board of trolling and vehement complaining.

Cynically, I think they turned the Leafs down because they knew there wouldn?t be as much money here (Can tax + cap structure), and conveniently chose to point the finger at fan drama.

Anthony Stolarz | Media Availability | July 3, 2024

There are lots of media interviews of Leafs players ...

6'6" 243lbs - biggest goalie in the league.

Stolarz won an OHL championship in London with Domi. Played with Marner there.
He played with Benoit & Hakanpaa in San Diego and Anaheim.
He has some idea of what he's getting into.

This interview stuck me as notable because when you compare Stolarz and Woll to Samsonov & Campbell (both who I really liked), they're both more laid back, relaxed and down to earth - very steady. I don't think they're going to have the confidence or mental issues Samsonov & Campbell did.

A lot of teams are shifting to goaltending by committee - or go with the hottest.
This isn't a bad group for trying to do that:
Woll
Stolarz
Murray
Hildeby
Akhtiamov
Peksa
