2025-26 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Was surprised to see that Maccelli is tied for 1st on the team in 5-on-5 points over the past 20 games with 8 (tied with Matthews and Domi). That probably says a lot more about how everyone is struggling to score (and that we miss Nylander whenever he's hurt) but still nice to see him producing more than he first did. Since he got back into the line-up after his 3-week benching he's had 18 points in 29 games, that's a 50-point pace at mostly even strength. He's also had the best xGF% on the team in that span by a pretty considerable margin.

So you're saying the Leafs can trade him? 😃

Maccelli has played better lately. Still don't want him on the team next season.

This team was never built right. Every GM has gotten it wrong. They were always going to struggle to win in the playoffs with the likes of Holl, Dermott, Lyubushkin, Edmundson, Liljegren, Gustafsson, Benoit, Marincin, Barrie, Zaitsev, Hunwick, Carrick.

Every season at least 1/3 of the D-core in the playoffs were below average players except last year. It was never good enough. Needed 6 competent D, never had it.
Maybe you forgot but I wonder why you left out the best 2 D men Dubas acquired in Muzzin and Brodie. Both were very good for the Leafs. One year they had Brodie, Muzz, Rielly, Bogosian, Holl, Dermott, with youngsters Sandin, Liljegren. That's a pretty good D core.

Dubois injuring Muzzin was basically the beginning of the end for this group. We probably win 3 Stanley Cups if that doesn't happen (kidding, kinda).

I honestly feel that the thing that stopped the Leafs from winning at least one cup in the last 60 years was Marion Hossa taking out Bryan Berard's eye. He was a 1st overall d-man, and I think he had the ability to win a Norris. It was one of those deals where I felt the Leafs stole a player from the Islanders because they gave up on him too soon. It was the reverse Leaf in that case.

I was listing all the below average d-man the Leafs utilized in the playoffs over the last 9 years (Not the good D they had). Holl, Dermott, Liljegren were not good, or at least, not good enough.

The Leafs could retain on all of McMann, Laughton, and Robertson making them all around league minimum salary. That could be valuable come tomorrow.

The Devils just waived Maxim Tsyplakov. He's had an absolutely dreadful year this year and has a 2.25M cap hit next year. The free agency options really aren't great and there is probably a non-zero chance that he just goes back to Russia anyway. Maybe worth a gamble...risky though.

There might be NCAA free agents that would be attracted to burning that first ELC year, so I'd leave some space for them
