2025-26 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

So even with us now in 5th this could either be a great result or a horrible result. We're still more likely to give the pick to Boston than not...

Matthews getting horrifically injured galvanized the team just enough to keep them out of 3rd last

Also kept the Ducks from putting EDM/VGK in the rear view mirror, so that’s extra suck

I actually don't completely view it that way. Do we just assume the team would go on a 10 game losing streak without Matthews injured? There's no way to know the other outcome but you have to think the team is better with Matthews than without.

If the Leafs lose out and Calgary or New York get 3/4 points in their remaining games, we'll drop one more and have an 80% chance of drafting top five.
Calgary plays Colorado and LA. NY plays Florida and Tampa. Maybe the Rangers can do it. I doubt the Flames can.

Still some movement possible.

Toronto can finish 4th IF Calgary takes 3 of their 4 remaining points AND Toronto loses in regulation to Ottawa
- Calgary plays Colorado tonight with the Avs on a back to back and playing for pride only with the President's trophy locked up
- Play LA on Thursday who might be playing to avoid the Avs in the first round

Toronto can finish 6th IF they win against Ottawa AND Seattle takes 0 of their 4 remaining points

IF the Leafs finish 5th and draft lottery doesn't change the standings the Leafs draft picks this year will be:

1st Round - 5th overall
2nd Round - 61st* overall (Buffalo's pick from LA for Laughton)
3rd Round - 69th overall
4th Round - 115th overall (Anaheim's pick from Seattle for McMann)
5th Round - 133rd overall, 160th overall (Colorado's pick for Roy)
6th Round - 170th overall

We will eventually have to pay the piper with two first round picks, so whatever, I've made my peace with whatever outcome happens, although getting top 5 or better is obviously the best current outcome. At least we have a reasonable number of picks even if the first rounder goes.

*Edit: Do we not also have our own 5th rounder?

Yes, that's the 133rd pick in the 5th round. The 160th one is Colorado's
