Armchair GM Thread 2024-25

I?m sure it?s happened but certainly I can?t think of the leafs having brothers playing in my time (back the late 90s kind of era).

Shayne Corson and Darcy Tucker were brothers-in-law, but that's about as close as you get from 90's to today.

*They also played together for Montreal.

Other than his name I don?t understand at all what the appeal would be.

What?s his ceiling? Kapanen? Honestly what use would be have. He?s not a centre, he?s not a defensive specialist, he?s not a penalty killer, he?s not tough. He doesn?t address any of the needs the leafs have.

Like others have said, he?s a potential cheap depth scoring option and possibly a diamond in the rough, with the right coaching and other resources could blossom into a quality player. He?s not an exciting add, nor does he fill a pressing need - which is why no one is suggesting adding him as more than someone who could potentially bounce between the Leafs and Marlies - but he probably comes cheap with no commitment, so what?s the harm, especially considering the UFA market has basically been picked bare.

Alex Nylander struggles a bit with:
[*] off puck consistency
[*] carrying the puck consistently

but is quite good at:
[*] getting lost in the OZ
[*] putting the puck into the net

Like an inverse Ilya Mikheyev, or a budget Patrik Laine with more of a finesse rather than power finish. He would need to be surrounded by worker bee linemates who can spring him for cherry picks or breakaways.

Unfortunately, his prime development years were lost in Buffalo's non-existent dev system (at the time) and then Chicago's tank-a-thon.

On the subject of brothers, recall Ulf and Kjell Samuelsson for the Penguins when I got NHLPA hockey for my Sega Megadrive in 1993 (was it branded as Genesis in Canada?). Used to mostly play as the Penguins and assumed they were brothers for some reason but having Googled seen they were not related at all.

Genesis in North America.

Thanks, I thought so. There's an alternative reality where I could have been a Pens fans because of Lemieux but I didn't have any team for the first five years or so of following hockey via the weekly highlights shows we got...until one of the main UK channels started covering the NHL live twice a week in 1998 and the Leafs signed Stockport born Steve Thomas.

(Sorry for the slight derailing)

Another sad origin story.

What has knies done to make anyone think he?d warrant anything close to that? [Quinton Byfield 6.25M x 5]

I mean I like knies and I can see growing into an impact player, but he?s nowhere close to that yet.

Well Knies has one season left on his ELC, if he scores 20 goals and gets around 50 points they'll be pointing to this contract, ergo they should probably extend him now to a cheaper deal

We have to start making breakout bets and lock in term + lower cap hits (over time) on the ones we're pretty sure of. We should have done it for Nylander and Marner and Matthews (if he was amenable).

Byfield has played parts of 2 seasons prior to this breakout one: 10Pts in 40 GP, 22Pts in 53GP.

Knies has 35pts in 80GP one season, playing on 3 different lines in his first full season. He is about to take off, especially if he's doing Berube-style hockey with one of the top 2 lines. Luring him out of that final NCAA season helped to keep his ELC production looking low. Lock him down ASAP to a 5.5Mx7 or something that feels wild to him and he'll blow it out of the water in short order.

KNIES MATTHEWS DOMI
MCMANN TAVARES NYLANDER
ROBERTSON KAMPF MARNER
JARNKROK DEWAR REAVES HOLMBERG

I think Kampf and Robertson could be better utilized and since we have the forward depth let's spread it out. Kampf/Marner could be a pretty good shutdown line and both Robertson and Kampf have decent finish for Marner's apples. Let's give Robertson and Kampf an opportunity to contribute offensively.

I think you'd see Marner having a shit fit if they played him with Kampf with any consistency in his contract year.

Honestly, a Nylander - K?mpf - Marner line would probably rip.

I think for starters we keep Domi with Matthews and Marner on a different line. I still like what I proposed above. We need 3 lines going this year and I think all 3 lines can score.

Extension for Matthew Knies, when? Sooner is better than later when we've been gifted a shortened ELC track record. 7 years @ 5ish would be a tidy bit of business for someone about to take off.

Hey maybe we need to push this up the timetable.

Digging into some (old) comps for Matt Knies:

Chris Kreider
Turned pro after 3 seasons with Boston College and got airdropped into the playoffs for 5G + 2A in an 18 game run in 2012 as a 21 year old.

3 year ELC | nothing much in the regular season (about the same as Knies last season), but very strong playoffs
2 years 2.475M AAV (3.59% CH%) | ~20G & ~45 pts per year
4 years 4.625M AAV (6.36% CH%) | ~25G & ~50 pts per year but marred with injury
7 years 6.5M AAV (7.4% CH%) | broke through for 52 G at 30 years old, and sitting just under 40G recently, ~75pts

Brandon Saad
3 year ELC + 1 yr slide | broke 20G and 50 pts in the final year
6 years 6M AAV (8.57% CH%) | broke 30G once, and hovered a little over 50 pts
5 years 4.5M AAV (5.1% CH%) | tapering down to 20ish G and 50 pts

Very modest playoff contributions

Josh Anderson (lol) not going to bother

--
My proposal of 7 years at 5M AAV is maybe a touch low for Knies and his agent to bite on the term this early even though it is quite rich for his current point totals. Let's go 5.7ish M AAV over 7 years for a 40M contract to sweeten the deal (~6-6.5% of CH%).

Nah, just throw some Keefe favourites over (Kampf or Jarnkrok, Nick Abruzzese) + Nick Robertson (lol).
