Auston Matthews

With 11 to go and already at 56, how long before he breaks the Ovechkin mark ?
He can't keep scoring at a goal a game pace, I say he "slows down" over the last 11 games and only gets 7 or 8 goals to finish around 63-64 goals

Looking pretty improbable that he doesn?t easily hit 60, though of course you never know. Hopefully the two game suspension doesn?t keep him just shy of 65, which was Ovechkin?s high-water mark (in 82 games).

I want him to break all the possible records, watch out Sittler.

Also want him (and Marner) to enter the Playoffs as hot as they can be, and keep rolling it.

Maybe he can score 4 more against Montreal tomorrow and hit 60 saturday. (joking, but Am i ?)  ;D

49 goals in his last 49 games, is that good?

I REALLY hope the Leafs do some damage in this year's playoffs and by damage I mean win the Cup.  I want to be able to look back at all the accomplishments this year without any remorse.  Matthews's records, team record in points (breaking 105) and the damn Cup.

Matthews had 1 goal in 6 games coming back from his wrist surgery.  He has 55 in 60 games since that time.

Last year while dealing with his wrist injury he had a stretch of 3 goals in 12 games.  Outside of that he put up 38 goals in 40 games.

This current iteration of Matthews is absolutely a goal/game player when healthy.

He's got a 6 goal lead on Draisaitl now...he's creating some separation there.

I think maintaining that separation and hitting 60 goals would tilt the Hart conversation in his favour.

Given the talk around Matthews being a 200ft player, how come there?s little chatter about him and the selke? I?m not sure who the grunt runner is, but you?d think he?d be in the top 5 at least..

Just taking a quick look at the voting last year, he didn?t get a single vote:

I have no doubt he'll pass 60, it's just by how much.  65+ would be pretty sweet.

Doesn't kill penalties = doesn't deserve the Selke in most (dumb) writers minds.

It's also why Marner gets Selke votes instead despite not being as good of a 5-on-5 defensive player as Matthews.

Just in general the Selke is a lot about reputation and it takes quite a while for a guy to get recognized as one of the better defensive forwards in the game.

5th in pts despite playing 5 fewer games(4 with Hub) then everyone above him, 2nd in P/GM behind McD, 1st in EV goals and leads by 8. 14 PIMs(McD has 41),
Strictly looking at centres....11th in blocked shots, 1st in takeaways(by 18), 1st in G/60,1st in 5v5 Pts/60 and it isn't close. Matthews is currently at 3.32 5v5 pts/60. Kadri is 2nd at 3.07. Drai is 2.64. McD is at 2.47. Also add in the way he plays D and it's a no brainer for me. If he doesn't win the Hart and the Lindsay I'll be surprised.

I won't be surprised if he doesn't win the Hart due to a lot of foreign hockey writers hating on the Leafs but I'd be surprised if the rest of the players in the league didn't vote for him for the Lindsay, they all know how hard it is to score like he does.

To put what Matthews is doing into some perspective, Alex Ovechkin has won three Hart trophies. In those three years, he produced at a clip of .73 GPG and 1.33 PPG. Matthews, over his last three seasons, is at .77 GPG and 1.29 PPG. So Matthews, over the last three years, has produced at roughly the same level as the best goal scorer in the game's history at his absolute best while being a fairly solid defensive C to boot.

That's...something.

Which is why McDavid or Huberdeau or Shesterkin or Harri Sateri will win the Hart.  :P

Yup. I'd be very surprised if he doesn't win the Lindsay. As for the Hart, he should win it, but it's more of a coinflip. Regardless of how some media types view him, the majority of the hockey world can see how special a player he is and how great a season he's having.

I have an ethical philosophy conundrum.

Say you're Auston Matthews.

It's the final game of the regular season (F Boston) and the Leafs are up 4-1 with Swayman pulled and you're sitting on 69 goals (woohoo 2nd period power play). The Leafs have already clinched 2nd in the division. You skate onto a loose puck at the Leafs blueline (thanks, Marner!) and Charlie McAvoy is fronting.

Do you flip it on net, or do you pull up for a soft bank chip shy of icing and let the record stand where it is (for the memes)?

Slap it at McAvoy and whatever happens happens.

The most surprising thing here is that Kadri is second in 5v5 pts/60. Talk about under appreciated.

Bunting is ahead of Kadri in P/60 5v5. Kerfoot is just behind Drai and ahead of McD...that guy is under appreciated also.
