Auston Matthews

My brother, who doesn?t follow hockey but lives in the Toronto area and is aware of the justified Matthews hype, texted me, ?Is Auston Matthews good enough that it?s possible that he could ultimately outshine Gretzky by the end of his career?? Of course, the answer is an easy ?no?. But the question did lead me into explaining why and touching on some of the all-time greats and historical comparables, including some currently playing, like Crosby, Ovechkin and McDavid. But, in the end, considering Matthews? career to date and his current trajectory (fully recognizing the unknown future variables of injury and decline), I asserted that with health and longevity Matthews has the chance to end up being considered one of the top 10-20 players of all-time, and perhaps considered a top 5 goal scorer.

Fair assessment?

I think LK needs to explain how that's even physically possible.

On the 8th Day God said, ok fine I?ve messed around with Leafs fans enough and reincarnated himself as a boy in Arizona and rigged the NHL draft to go to Toronto.

He is probably going to pass Vaive for 5th in career goals next year

You know who probably isn?t happy that Vaive?s single season record is broken? Rick Vaive.

Anyway, I?m just amazed at all the leafs haters around the country twisting themselves into knots to diminish what Matthews has accomplished. ?It?s not 50 in 50 because it wasn?t to start the season. It?s just 50 random games?.

Ok. Fine. Is it any less impressive? I know there?s no reasoning with these folks, but I?ll never understand these people who spend more time at actively hating the leafs than cheering for some other team.

Maybe he was misrepresenting himself, but in interviews, Vaive actually seemed pretty enthusiastic about Matthews breaking his record. Obviously, he and everybody know that Matthews is better than Vaive. Being second-best to Matthews remains a hell of an accomplishment.

The people diminishing the 50 in 50 seem so largely based in Edmonton. Would sports shows in Canada make a big deal out of Leon Draisaitl scoring 50 goals in 50 consecutive games? Yeah, they would, if he could do it, which he can?t.

I?m not even a Boston fan, but it still irks me that Cam Neely never got the 50 in 50 recognition for scoring 50 goals in the only 49 games he played in 93-94 because he didn?t do it in Boston?s first 50 games. Oh, you scored 50 goals in 49 games, but you missed a bunch of games due to injury and couldn?t do it in the team?s first 50 games? Big deal, you loser, get healthy you injured freak.

Sportsnet's column on Matthews' night doesn't mention the 50 in 50 thing until the 7th paragraph. People are grossly underrating how massive of an accomplishment this was, "unofficial" or not. Even Ovechkin, the guy who is poised to pass Wayne Gretzky as the NHL's all-time goal scoring leader, has never really come close to 50-in-50 in one season (he did reach 48 in 50 but between two seasons, which would be fair to say isn't quite the same but still nuts).

It's definitely weird.  I liken it to the situation here in Ottawa where Ottawa fans felt Erik Karlsson didn't get enough credit or respect for how good he was as a defencemen.  I would agree that in the beginning, he didn't, but then he won two Norris trophies, and the Ottawa fans were still complaining that he didn't get enough credit, and my response was "What more credit/recognition do you need?".

Fan bases are weird when it comes to trying to justify why they feel their player is good.  Somehow, people think that by admitting Matthews is good, it somehow takes away from their player, when it really doesn't.  In this case two players can be good.  Matthews is really good at scoring goals, and right now he is the best player in the league at scoring goals.  We don't need any special stats.  Like when Kessel was here and people would post the "over the last three years Kessel is third in the league at scoring goals at 5 on 5 behind only player x and player y".  You don't need that with Matthews, because he is first, and he is first in any goal scoring category you want to measure, except maybe power play goals.

In a way though, we fans of the Leafs should sit back and enjoy this, because when Matthews is gone, we may not see a player this special on the Leafs for a while. Doesn't mean they may not have good teams, but just not built around a player as special as Matthews.

Oh the vaive thing was a joke, it wasn?t based on anything.
A joke best read in Norm MacDonald voice with a generous pause between first and second sentences. Solid.

That?s incredible. I?m not even kidding. As I was typing it that?s how it sounded in my head.

SPICY HOT TAKES

Yikes. Caufield is having a nice little run, but?

?That Crosby is something right now, but Kulemin in the long run is the better bet.?
