Auston Matthews

Your key word there is "witnessing", as it's still being written. I have no doubt that he can get there.

Get to where? And what does he need to do to get there? It seems to me you're conflating team success with his abilities as a player. Because he more-or-less owns every important Leafs' goal-scoring record. But he's not in the upper echelon? I just can't square that

I mean, should I have listed every player that's ever been good for Toronto? Forgot a few. Forgot Clark too.

Please elaborate on why you strongly disagree? I have no issue seeing the other side of it.

I'm sorry, did you just say you forgot Clark? In a discussion of players who have contributed more than Matthews?

Why, because he's punched people?

I forgot Clark in the sense that he's considered a "legend" by many.

It's fine if you can't 'square' that. You have your opinion. I'm obviously in the minority here.  That said, why should a teams success not be an important part of how a player is remembered? I get that it can't be the only way, but it certainly has to be part of it.

to make any of this team a legend.

I'm glad we're using objective qualifications.
I can say for certainty that every single Leafs player in the history of the team had a heart.

It's pretty amusing that we are debating the level of Matthews' greatness.  He just won the Hart and the Lindsay; the Hart hasn't been taken by a Leaf in almost 70 years.  He's already won 5 major trophies; before him the last Leaf to win a major trophy was, who ... Mogilny with the Lady Byng?  Which is at best a minor major.

Hey Sundin won the award named after the Lays potato chip guy

Garbage journalism. MacKinnon is eligible to be a UFA a whole season before Matthews. But you know, he?s not with the leafs so not worth an article.

Something tells me that if you're writing for NorthStarBet, they're looking for clicks more than in-depth wide-ranging coverage of the NHL.

The top of the NHL pay scale is so weird as this point because it's been effectively decided by teams being stupid in Free Agency and players taking less than they're worth to help with the cap. So is "fair" for Mackinnon a reasonable amount more than Tavares? Sure, but not too much more because then he's into McDavid territory where he probably doesn't belong. Is it a lot more than Kucherov? As much as Matthews?

The market as is is more or less just a complete fabrication.

I'm still blown away that McDavid allowed himself to essentially be bullied out of $6mil by idiot Edmonton media members on his current deal.

This is the garbage we?re going to have to endure until he signs. If he doesn?t sign an extension the second he?s eligible I think the Canadian sports media conglomerate will collapse in on itself.

Typical for Ottawa.  Hate the Leafs first, love the Sens second.  The only way it would stop is if people just don't pay attention to it.  I'm less angry when I get home at night now that I don't listen to the local radio station on the way home.
